How to convert QuickTime to MP4 on Mac

QuickTime Player does not export MP4, and Apple says so. You can export a more compatible .mov from it, or make a real MP4 with a free converter in your browser. Steps for both.

Short answer: Apple's Support page says "QuickTime Player doesn't export movies as MP4 videos." Its File, Export As menu saves a QuickTime movie (.mov). To get a real .mp4, use a converter. The free MOV to MP4 converter runs in your browser: drop in the .mov, download the .mp4.

Apple facts come from "Export movies to other file formats and resolutions using QuickTime Player on Mac" and "View information about a media file in QuickTime Player on Mac", read on 23 October 2026. Neither page shows a publish date. The converter facts come from that tool's own page.

Way 1: Make an MP4 with the free converter

This is the way that gives you an .mp4 file.

  1. Open the MOV to MP4 converter.
  2. Drop your QuickTime recording onto the page. You can drop a whole batch.
  3. Wait for it to finish, then download the MP4 files.

The tool page says conversion happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and that when the picture and sound can be copied as they are there is no quality loss. It re-encodes only a stream that would not play in an MP4.

If the video is HEVC and your target player cannot open it, use the HEVC to MP4 converter, which turns it into H.264 in an MP4.

Way 2: Export a more compatible file from QuickTime Player

This stays a .mov, not an MP4. It helps when the problem is the codec inside, not the box. Apple's steps:

  1. Open the recording in QuickTime Player.
  2. Choose File, Export As, then pick 4K, 1080p, 720p or 480p.
  3. For 4K or 1080p, open the Format menu and choose Greater Compatibility for H.264, or Smaller File Size for HEVC.
  4. Type a name, choose where to save, and click Save.

Apple's page lists what each option makes:

OptionCodecSize cap
4KH.264 or HEVC3840 x 2160
1080pH.264 or HEVC1920 x 1080
720pH.2641280 x 720
480pH.264640 x 480
Audio OnlyAAC audio, Apple MPEG-4 audio filenot applicable

Options larger than your recording are dimmed. Apple recommends 480p for posting online, such as to YouTube. A lower size means less picture detail, so only pick it when you need a small file. Export As makes a new file and leaves your original alone.

Way 3: Check what you have first

Sometimes you do not need to convert at all. Open the file in QuickTime Player and press Command-I. Apple says the Movie Inspector shows the compression format, frame rate and size. Apple's pages call H.264 the more compatible option. If it is already H.264, Way 1 is all you need. To learn the difference between the codecs, read H.264 vs HEVC for screen recordings.

What about iMovie?

Apple's iMovie page for exporting a file gives a Format menu, a Resolution menu, a Quality menu and a Compress menu. It does not say what file type results, so MP4 is not confirmed there. Check the saved file's extension before you rely on it.

When a plain conversion is not enough

A converter changes the file type. It does not fix a rough recording. If you also want smooth zoom on clicks and a cleaner cursor, MotionShine is a free Mac screen recorder, made by the same person who wrote this post. It has an editor with text, pictures, music lanes and voice over. Free exports reach 720p at 30 fps with no watermark and no time limit, and Pro unlocks 1080p, 1440p, 4K and 60 fps. It is not for you if you only need to change a file type, because Way 1 is free and faster.
