Guide

70 °F in °C, worked out and checked.

70 °F is 21.11 °C when rounded to 2 decimals. To do 70 F to C, take 32 off 70 to get 38, then divide by 1.8. That gives 21.11 as a rounded figure. The exact value is the fraction 190/9, which is 21 1/9 °C, so the decimals go on for ever. This page works out 70 °F in Celsius, shows the sum, and has a box where you can try any other temperature.

How to use the converter

  1. The box Degrees Fahrenheit (°F) starts at 70. Type another number to change it. A minus sign works.
  2. The big card shows the answer in °C. Under it the sum is written out step by step.
  3. Decimals sets how many digits show. The first choice shows up to 2 and drops zeros at the end.
  4. Press Turn it around: °C to °F to go the other way. The answer moves into the box and the page shows it in Fahrenheit.
  5. Copy result copies "70 °F = 21.11 °C". Copy link copies an address that opens this page with your number. A row in the table loads when you click it, and Back to 70 °F returns to the start.

The sum for 70 °F

NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C gives the equation: degree Celsius = (degree Fahrenheit − 32) ÷ 1.8, and kelvin = that + 273.15 (page read 24 Oct 2026). Both 1.8 and 32 are exact. So 70 − 32 = 38, and 38 ÷ 1.8 = 21.11 (rounded). Worked as a fraction, 38 × 5 ÷ 9 = 190/9. In kelvin, 70 °F is 294.261111 K, and in degrees Rankine it is 529.67 °R.

Why the sum looks like this

A Fahrenheit degree is smaller than a Celsius degree. The formula fits 180 Fahrenheit degrees into the same gap as 100 Celsius degrees, so one Fahrenheit degree is 100 ÷ 180 = 5/9 of a Celsius degree. The zero marks are in different places too, because 32 °F sits at 0 °C. So 70 °F is 38 Fahrenheit degrees above that mark, which is 38 × 5/9 = 21.11 Celsius degrees above 0 °C.

Check it in your head

The quick habit is to take 30 off and halve it. For 70 °F that gives 20 °C, which is 1.11 °C too low. A closer way is to take off 32 (38), multiply by 5 (190), then divide by 9. That gives 21.11 °C when rounded.

70 °F is 21 1/9 °C

70 − 32 = 38, and 38 × 5 ÷ 9 = 190/9, which is 21 1/9 °C. As a decimal that is 21.1111 and the 1 repeats for ever, so any display rounds it. The whole Celsius numbers on either side are 21 °C, which is 69.8 °F, and 22 °C, which is 71.6 °F.

More worked examples

  • 69 °F. 69 − 32 = 37, and 37 ÷ 1.8 = 20.56 °C.
  • 70.5 °F. 70.5 − 32 = 38.5, and 38.5 ÷ 1.8 = 21.39 °C.
  • Twice the temperature. 140 °F is 60 °C, not 42.22 °C, because the 32 is taken off once and not doubled.

Worked examples near 70 °F

The formula puts 32 °F at 0 °C and 212 °F at 100 °C. 70 °F is 38 °F above the 32 °F mark, so the answer is 21.11 °C above 0 °C.

Rounding

The answer does not end, so it has to be rounded. To 0, 1, 2 and 3 decimals it is 21, 21.1, 21.11 and 21.111 °C. Rounding to a whole degree is off by 0.111 °C, and rounding to 2 decimals is off by 0.0011 °C at most.

Going back

Going back with the exact value gives 70 °F. If you use the rounded 21.11 °C instead, you get 69.998 °F, a small gap that comes only from the rounding. One degree Celsius is 1.8 °F, so 71.8 °F is 22.11 °C.

Mistakes that matter at this number

  • Skipping the 32. 70 ÷ 1.8 = 38.89, which is 17.78 °C too high.
  • Using the Celsius formula the wrong way round. 70 × 1.8 + 32 = 158, which only works from Celsius to Fahrenheit.
  • Reading the answer on the wrong scale. 70 °C is not 70 °F: 70 °C is 158 °F.

How accurate is this page

The sum uses exact fractions, not the floating point numbers most calculators use, so no tiny error hides in the last digits. The answer is rounded once, at the end, to the number of decimals you pick. The factors come from NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C, which gives 1.8 and 32 as exact. Everything runs in your browser.

However you type it

70 F to C, 70 degrees F to C, 70f in c and 70 Fahrenheit to Celsius are the same sum. Check the unit letters before you trust any answer, because the right number on the wrong scale is the commonest slip. The arrow keys step the number in the box up and down, which helps when you have a short list to run through, and only your decimals choice is remembered. Other values close by: 22 °F is -5.56 °C; 50 °F is 10 °C; 80 °F is 26.67 °C; 90 °F is 32.22 °C.

Questions

Good to know.

What is 70 °F in Celsius?

70 °F is 21.11 °C (rounded). 70 − 32 = 38, and 38 ÷ 1.8 = 21.11, rounded to 2 decimals.

What is the formula for Fahrenheit to Celsius?

°C = (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8, from NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C. For 70 °F that is (70 − 32) ÷ 1.8.

What is 21 °C in Fahrenheit?

21 × 1.8 + 32 = 69.8 °F. That is 0.2 °F under 70 °F, which is why 70 °F is not a whole number of degrees Celsius.

How can I work out 70 °F in my head?

Take off 32 to get 38, multiply by 5 to get 190, then divide by 9. That gives 21.11 °C when rounded.

What is 71 °F in Celsius?

21.67 °C, rounded. One degree Fahrenheit is 5/9 of a degree Celsius, about 0.56 °C.

What is 70 °F in kelvin?

About 294.26 K. Convert to Celsius first, then add 273.15.

Why does 70 °F never end?

70 °F is 190/9 °C, and 9 does not divide a power of ten, so the decimal repeats: 21.1111 and on. Any display rounds it to 21.11.
