Guide

How to convert acres to square feet, and picture the land.

To convert acres to square feet, multiply the acres by 43,560. One acre is 43,560 sq ft, so 2 acres is 87,120 sq ft, a quarter acre is 10,890 sq ft and 0.1 acre is 4,356 sq ft. The factor is exact, so the answer has no rounding unless you ask for fewer decimals.

How to use the converter

  1. Type the acreage in the Acres (ac) box. The page opens on a quarter acre.
  2. Read the square feet in the big result, then square yards, square meters and hectares in the cards.
  3. Type a fraction as a decimal, or as 1/3 or 3/4. The converter reads fractions, so 1/3 acre gives exactly 14,520 sq ft, while 0.33 acre gives 14,374.8 sq ft.
  4. Click a row in Common values to load it, Copy result to copy a line, or Print chart for the table of acres.
  5. Press the swap button (or S) to go back from square feet to acres.

0.33 or 1/3 acre

Listings often round a third of an acre to 0.33. That is about 145 square feet short: 0.33 acre is 14,374.8 sq ft, and a true third is 14,520 sq ft. When the lot size decides a permit or a price, ask for the square feet and not the rounded acres.

Why the acre is 43,560

The acre comes from old surveying. A chain was 66 feet and a furlong was 660 feet, and an acre is one chain by one furlong: 66 × 660 = 43,560 sq ft. NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C (checked 26 Oct 2026) lists a square chain as 4,356 square feet, which is 0.1 acre, and one acre as 43,560 square feet. It also says the survey foot was retired at the end of 2022, so an acre is now defined with the international foot, 4,046.856 422 4 square meters.

How wide is that plot

If the land is a square, each side is the square root of the square feet. The table shows the sum for plots that people ask about.

AcresSquare feetSide of a square plot
0.2510,890104.36 ft
0.521,780147.58 ft

5217,800466.69 ft
10435,600660 ft
401,742,4001,320 ft

Ten acres is a perfect square of 660 ft by 660 ft, because 660 × 660 = 435,600. One acre is about 208.71 ft by 208.71 ft.

Worked examples

  • 3 acres. 3 × 43,560 = 130,680 sq ft.
  • 1.5 acres. 65,340 sq ft.
  • 0.2 acre. 8,712 sq ft.
  • 40 acres. 1,742,400 sq ft, which is 1,320 ft by 1,320 ft as a square.
  • 160 acres. 6,969,600 sq ft. That is a quarter of a square mile.

From acres to what you build

Square feet is the unit for fencing, seed, mulch and slabs. A 12,000 sq ft lawn, a 20,000 sq ft pasture and a 2,500 sq ft building all use it. If you need the cost of concrete for part of the land, the concrete calculator takes length and width in feet, and the gravel calculator does the same for stone.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not read an acre as a length. There is no such thing as an acre of fence. Do not multiply a perimeter in feet by 43,560. And keep the unit on the answer: square feet, not feet. For big plots the square footage grows fast; 160 acres is 6,969,600 sq ft, a seven-digit number that is easy to misplace a comma in. The Copy result button puts the commas in for you.

The reverse sum is on square feet to acres. For land measured in square miles see square miles to acres.
