How to convert bar to psi, with the numbers worked out.

To convert bar to psi, multiply by 14.5038. So 2 bar is 29.01 psi, 2.5 bar is 36.26 psi and 10 bar is 145.04 psi. One bar is 100,000 pascals, and one psi is about 6,894.757 pascals, so 100,000 ÷ 6,894.757 gives the factor.

How to use the converter

  1. Type the amount in the Bars (bar) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
  2. The big result shows Pounds per square inch (psi). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
  3. The cards under the result give the same pressure in other units.
  4. Type in the second box, or press the swap button, to convert pounds per square inch to bars instead.
  5. Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.

The factor, worked out

NIST gives 1 bar = 1.0 E+05 Pa and 1 psi = 6.894 757 E+03 Pa. A psi is a pound-force (0.45359237 kg × 9.80665 m/s²) pressing on one square inch (0.0254 m × 0.0254 m). So 1 bar = 100,000 ÷ 6,894.757293 = 14.503774 psi. The exact value comes from the pound, standard gravity and the inch, which the converter holds as fractions.

A quick estimate

Multiply by 14.5. For 3 bar, 3 × 14.5 = 43.5 psi, against the true 43.51. Going back, divide psi by 14.5: 29 psi ÷ 14.5 = 2 bar. The estimate is 0.03 percent low.

Worked examples

  • A gauge reading 2.4 bar. 2.4 × 14.5038 = 34.81 psi.
  • A pump rated 8 bar. 116 psi.
  • A line at 6 bar. 87 psi, or 600 kPa.
  • A pressure washer at 150 bar. 2,176 psi.
  • Back the other way. 32 psi = 2.206 bar. Press the swap button and type 32.

Gauge or absolute?

Most gauges read pressure above the air around them. That is gauge pressure, sometimes written barg or psig. Absolute pressure counts from a vacuum, so it is about one atmosphere higher. The conversion factor is the same for both, but do not mix a gauge reading with an absolute one in the same sum.

Common gauge readings

Some typical readings converted: 1 bar is 14.5 psi, 2 bar is 29 psi, 4 bar is 58 psi and 7 bar is 101.5 psi. These are only unit conversions. The pressure you should use for a tyre, a boiler or a tank comes from the maker's label or manual.

Where the numbers come from

NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 lists 1 bar as 1.0 E+05 Pa, and the pound-force per square inch as 6.894 757 E+03 Pa. Checked 24 Oct 2026. The converter keeps the factors as exact fractions and rounds only the last digit shown. It is a unit converter, not a safety tool: for a tyre, boiler or tank, use the value printed on the equipment or in its manual.
