Guide
How to count days, with worked examples.
A day counter shows how many days have passed since a date, or how many are left until one. Type a date and the count appears at once; save it with a label and it stays here, ticking over at midnight, every time you come back. Use it for days since you quit something, days of a streak, days since a move, a wedding, a start date at work, or days until a trip. You can keep as many counters as you like.
How to use the day counter
- Type a Label, such as "Days since I started the new job".
- Pick the Date or click Use today. The Preview on the left shows the count right away.
- Tick Count the first day as day 1 if the start date itself should count. Streaks usually do; "days since" usually does not.
- Click Save this counter. It joins the list, newest first.
- On a saved counter, Copy copies a line such as "Days since I started running: 297 days since Sat 1 Jan 2026". Copy link makes a link that opens the same counter for someone else. Delete removes it.
What each counter shows
The big number is the day count. Below it:
- Years, months and days. Whole calendar months are counted first, then the days left over. From 29 February 2020 to 24 October 2026 is 6 years, 7 months and 25 days.
- Weeks and days. 283 days is 40 weeks and 3 days.
- The next round number for a counter that counts up: day 7, 14, 21, 30, 50, 75 and 100, then every 100 days to 1,000, every 500 days to 5,000, and every 1,000 after that. A bar shows how far you are between the last one and the next, and the date it falls on.
- The next anniversary, with its date and the days to wait.
- For a counter heading to a future date, the weekday it falls on.
Worked example
Say you started a habit on 1 January 2026 and today is 24 October 2026. January has 31 days, and the day of the year for 24 October is 297. Without counting the first day, the count is 297 minus 1, which is 296 days since. Counting the first day as day 1 gives 297. As years, months and days it is 9 months and 23 days. The next round number is day 300, which falls on 27 October 2026 if you count the first day, and the first anniversary is 1 January 2027.
Days since or days until
The page works out which one you need from the date. A date in the past counts up, a date in the future counts down, and today shows "Today". The same counter flips by itself when the day arrives, so a countdown to a move becomes "days since the move" the day after. If you want a live countdown to a time of day, in seconds, use the countdown to date page instead. This page counts whole calendar days.
Why it never drifts
The count is done on calendar days, not on 24 hour blocks. A clock change in spring or autumn makes one day 23 or 25 hours long, which can throw off tools that divide milliseconds by 86,400,000. Here each date is a whole day number, so a counter shows the right figure all year and in any time zone. The day changes at midnight on the device you are using, and the page notices while it is open.
Where your counters live
Counters are saved in this browser on this device. They are not sent anywhere, so they will not appear on another phone or computer, and clearing site data in the browser removes them. To move one to another device, use Copy link and open it there, then click Add to my counters.
To count the days between two fixed dates, use days between dates. For the exact date a number of days away, try the date calculator.
Questions
Good to know.
How do I count the days since a date?
Pick the date. A date in the past counts up, so the big number is the days since. Tick the first day box if the start date should be day 1.
Can I keep more than one counter?
Yes. Save as many as 30, each with its own label. They are listed newest first.
Do my counters stay when I close the page?
They stay in this browser on this device. Clearing site data removes them. Nothing is sent to a server.
Does a counter update by itself?
Yes. The numbers move on at midnight on your device while the page is open, and are right again the next time you open it.
Is the start day counted?
Not by default, so a date that is today shows day 0. Tick Count the first day as day 1 to count it.
Can I share a counter?
Use Copy link on a saved counter. The person who opens it sees your label and date and can add it to their own list.
What is the difference from the days between dates page?
That page gives the gap between two fixed dates. This one keeps today as one end and keeps your counters for next time.
