Guide

How many days until New Year, and how it is worked out.

The days until New Year are the calendar days from today to 1 January, and the countdown above also shows the exact time left to the stroke of midnight on your clock. As a worked example, on 18 October 2026 there are 75 days to go until Friday 1 January 2027. The table below the numbers shows when the new year arrives in 17 places around the world, plus your own zone if it is not in the list.

How to use the New Year countdown

  1. Read the big number for the calendar days left, and the boxes for the exact time to midnight.
  2. Under Time zone, keep your own zone or pick another place. The countdown then runs to midnight there.
  3. Scroll to When the new year arrives. Each row shows the time left, or how long ago the new year arrived, and the moment on your own clock.
  4. Press Full screen to show it on a display. Press Copy link to send the page, or Copy result for one line of text.

New Year's Day is 1 January

US federal law lists New Year's Day as January 1 (checked 18 Oct 2026, 5 U.S.C. 6103), and the federal holidays page of the US Office of Personnel Management shows it on that date each year. Only the weekday moves.

Midnight comes zone by zone

The new year starts at 00:00 on each local clock, so it arrives in the east first. When a place in a time zone reaches midnight, a place one zone to the west still has an hour to go. The table lists the new year's arrival in order, from Kiritimati, at UTC+14 the first place in the list, to the zone at UTC-12, the last. Auckland comes 12 hours before Berlin and 13 hours before London, where the clocks are on UTC in January.

Take an example. When the new year arrives in London, it is 7 pm on 31 December in New York, because New York is 5 hours behind in winter. It is already 1 pm on 1 January in Auckland, which is 13 hours ahead. The table shows these gaps in time left for the date you open it.

Counting to another zone's midnight

Pick a place under Time zone to count to its midnight. The page reads the zone's offset for that exact date from your browser's time zone data, so daylight saving is included. This is useful for a call with family in another country, or a live stream that starts at their midnight.

What the page does after midnight

On 1 January the page says Today and counts to the next one. The table keeps showing the places that have had the new year, with how long ago it arrived.

The count from a few dates

Counted by the calendar to 1 January 2027, there are 61 days left on 1 November, 31 on 1 December, 17 on 15 December, 7 on 25 December and 1 on 31 December. Each is the number of dates to cross: from 15 December to 1 January is 16 days to 31 December plus 1.

A note on leap seconds

UTC sometimes adds a leap second. A draft of the ISO 8601 standard, kept on the Library of Congress site (a 2016 working draft, ISO/WD 8601-1, read 18 Oct 2026), says an inserted second is shown as 23:59:60 and is normally added on 30 June or 31 December. Browsers keep time without them, so on a device clock the page counts every midnight as 24 hours of 86,400 seconds, which is what a party needs.

Where the 17 places come from

The table lists a spread of places, from the first to the last along the clock, and adds your own zone if it is not there. The last row, UTC-12, is a zone marker, not a town. Pick a place under Time zone to count to its midnight.

Common problems

  • The big number and the boxes differ by a day. The big number counts dates. The boxes show the exact time left, which rounds down.
  • A place shows a different day. The table shows each place's own clock, so a place that is ahead may already be on 1 January.
  • Seconds look a little off. The page uses your device's clock. If it is slightly wrong, so is the count.

To count to a different moment, use the countdown to date. To compare any times between places, use the time zone converter.
