Type a time in India and see the time in New York, or start from New York and see India. Pick a date and the gap is right for it: India does not change its clocks, but New York does, so the gap is 10 hours 30 minutes in winter and 9 hours 30 minutes in summer. Both clocks run live, a table gives every hour of the day, and the planner shows when both sides are at work.
Indian working hours and New York working hours do not overlap on most dates, so the planner also shows when both sides are awake. For most of the year that means the Indian evening and the New York morning. Change Work starts and Work ends on the right to match your own day.

How it works
01 / Offsets
India is a fixed UTC+5:30. New York is UTC-5 in winter and UTC-4 in summer, so the gap is 10 h 30 min or 9 h 30 min.
02 / Date
The gap is looked up for the exact date and time, so a call near the March or November change is still correct.
03 / Planner
Working hours rarely overlap, so the planner also shows when both sides are awake.
Guide
IST to EST means turning India Standard Time, which is UTC+5:30, into US Eastern time. India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of EST, which is UTC-5. New York does not stay on EST all year. From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November it is on EDT, which is UTC-4, and then India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead. India never changes its clocks, so the gap moves by one hour when New York does. The converter above works out the right gap for the date you pick.
Take 9:00 AM in India on Monday 19 October 2026. India is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC, so subtract that: 9:00 AM becomes 3:30 AM UTC. New York is on EDT that day, which is 4 hours behind UTC, so subtract 4 hours: 3:30 AM UTC becomes 11:30 PM on Sunday 18 October 2026. The answer is the day before: 9:00 AM IST = 11:30 PM EDT (Sun 18 Oct, day before).
Now the same 9:00 AM in India on Monday 19 January 2026, in winter. UTC is again 3:30 AM. New York is on EST, 5 hours behind UTC, so 3:30 AM UTC becomes 10:30 PM on Sunday 18 January 2026. That is 9:00 AM IST = 10:30 PM EST (Sun 18 Jan, day before). Same Indian clock, one hour apart in New York.
Most shared working time sits in the Indian evening and the New York morning. Here is the same Indian clock time on a summer date and a winter date. Every row is on the same day in New York:
| India (IST) | New York, 15 Jul 2026 (EDT) | New York, 15 Jan 2026 (EST) |
|---|---|---|
| 5:30 PM | 8:00 AM | 7:00 AM |
| 6:30 PM | 9:00 AM | 8:00 AM |
| 7:30 PM | 10:00 AM | 9:00 AM |
| 8:30 PM | 11:00 AM | 10:00 AM |
| 9:30 PM | 12:00 PM | 11:00 AM |
| 10:30 PM | 1:00 PM | 12:00 PM |
The other direction moves too. A call fixed at 9:00 AM in New York is 6:30 PM in India in summer and 7:30 PM in winter. If your team keeps a standing call in US time, the Indian side moves by an hour twice a year. If it is fixed in Indian time, the US side moves instead.
Only the US side changes. In 2026 New York moved to EDT on Sunday 8 March 2026 and returns to EST on Sunday 1 November 2026. In 2027 the dates are Sunday 14 March 2027 and Sunday 7 November 2027. The converter lists these dates from your browser's time zone data, so it stays right in later years. Between those dates the gap is 9 hours 30 minutes; the rest of the year it is 10 hours 30 minutes.
EST is Eastern Standard Time, UTC-5. EDT is Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-4. People often write EST all year when they mean the clock in New York, and that is where wrong meeting times come from: 9:00 AM IST is not 10:30 PM EST in July, because New York is on EDT then. If you are not sure, write ET, or read the date and use the converter with Eastern Time (EST or EDT) selected. Choose EST only when a source really means UTC-5 all year, such as a fixed schedule written in EST.
India's offset has a half hour in it. The National Physical Laboratory of India, which maintains IST, gives it as UTC plus 5:30 hours. That is why an Indian time on the hour lands on the half hour in New York. The IANA database has no daylight saving rule in use for India, and its list of zones for India has just one, so the same clock applies across the country.
The letters IST are used for India Standard Time, for Irish Standard Time (UTC+1 in summer) and for Israel Standard Time (UTC+2). This page reads IST as India. If your IST is Ireland or Israel, use the time zone converter and pick Dublin or Jerusalem.
Sources, checked 18 Oct 2026. The United States rule is in 49 CFR Part 71, section 71.2: standard time moves ahead one hour at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and ends at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. The US Department of Transportation says a state may exempt itself by state law. For India, the National Physical Laboratory of India gives IST as UTC plus 5:30 hours. The offsets and the zone names come from the IANA time zone database (version 2026e), the same data your browser uses.

ET is Eastern Time, the clock in the eastern United States, EST in winter and EDT in summer. It avoids naming the wrong one.
