Guide
How many tablespoons are in a milliliter, and which tablespoon to use.
There are 0.06763 US tablespoons in 1 milliliter. To convert milliliters to tablespoons, divide by 14.78676. For a quick answer on a label, divide by 15 instead. So 30 mL is 2.029 US tablespoons, or exactly 2 label tablespoons. The two answers are about 1.44 percent apart, and this page shows both so you can choose.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the Milliliters (mL) box, for example 45.
- The big result shows US tablespoons. Under it, the Label tablespoons (15 mL) card divides by exactly 15, and other cards give teaspoons, fluid ounces and cups.
- Type tablespoons in the second box to get milliliters, or press S to swap.
- Choose Decimals. 1 or 2 is enough for the kitchen. Auto shows five or more.
- Click any row in Common values to load it, then Copy result or Print chart.
Two tablespoons, and where each comes from
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C lists the US tablespoon, measuring, as half a fluid ounce exactly, and as 15 milliliters rounded to the nearest milliliter. NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 gives the closer figure of 14.78676 mL. Both pages checked 19 Oct 2026. This converter uses the exact half fluid ounce, which is 14.78676478125 mL, so the answers are exact up to the digits you pick.
Food labels use a rounder spoon. 21 CFR 101.9(b)(5)(viii), read on the Legal Information Institute copy of the regulation, says a tablespoon means 15 mL for nutrition labeling. That is a rule for labels. A real US tablespoon is a little smaller, so 15 mL is 1.01442 of one.
Milliliters to tablespoons, both ways
| Milliliters | US tablespoons | Label tablespoons (15 mL) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 mL | 0.33814 | 0.33333 |
| 10 mL | 0.67628 | 0.66667 |
| 15 mL | 1.01442 | 1 |
| 30 mL | 2.02884 | 2 |
| 45 mL | 3.04326 | 3 |
| 60 mL | 4.05768 | 4 |
| 100 mL | 6.7628 | 6.66667 |
| 120 mL | 8.11537 | 8 |
| 240 mL | 16.23073 | 16 |
| 250 mL | 16.90701 | 16.66667 |
The gap is the same share of every amount. At 15 mL it is 1.01442 against 1. At 240 mL it is 16.231 against 16. Pick one spoon and use it all through the recipe, so the gap stays the same size.
Worked examples
- 20 mL of oil. 20 ÷ 14.78676 = 1.353 US tablespoons. By the label rule it is 1.333.
- 100 mL of sauce. 6.763 US tablespoons, or 6.667 label tablespoons, which is 6 tablespoons and two thirds of one.
- 7.5 mL. 0.507 US tablespoons. That is half a label tablespoon (0.5).
- 1 mL. 0.06763 US tablespoons or 0.06667 label tablespoons. Too small to measure with a tablespoon.
- Back again, 3 tablespoons. 3 × 14.78676 = 44.360 mL, against 45 mL on the label rule.
Which one should you divide by
If the amount comes from a food label or a recipe that was written from label figures, divide by 15. If you are measuring with a real US measuring spoon, divide by 14.78676, or read the big result. When you have a cup or a jug marked in milliliters and a set of spoons, the two answers differ by 1.44 percent, which matters little for one or two spoons.
Tablespoons back to milliliters
| US tablespoons | Milliliters, US spoon | Milliliters, label spoon (15 mL) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 14.79 | 15 |
| 2 | 29.57 | 30 |
| 3 | 44.36 | 45 |
| 4 | 59.15 | 60 |
| 5 | 73.93 | 75 |
| 8 | 118.29 | 120 |
| 10 | 147.87 | 150 |
| 16 | 236.59 | 240 |
For 16 tablespoons the US spoon gives 236.59 mL, which is one US cup, and the label spoon gives 240 mL, which is the cup size of the same labeling rule. Both keep the 16 to 1 count.
Milliliters in cups
A jug marked in milliliters often meets a recipe in cups. The table below sets the US cup of 236.588 mL against the 240 mL label cup. The label cup is the cup in the same labeling rule, so use it with label tablespoons.
| Milliliters | US cups | Label cups (240 mL) |
|---|---|---|
| 60 mL | 0.254 | 0.250 |
| 120 mL | 0.507 | 0.500 |
| 125 mL | 0.528 | 0.521 |
| 180 mL | 0.761 | 0.750 |
| 240 mL | 1.014 | 1.000 |
| 250 mL | 1.057 | 1.042 |
| 500 mL | 2.113 | 2.083 |
Mistakes that are specific to milliliters and tablespoons
The first is to mix a teaspoon number into the sum. A tablespoon is three teaspoons, so 15 mL is 3 label teaspoons and 1 label tablespoon, not 15 of anything. The second is to read milliliters as grams. This page converts volume only, and a volume does not tell you a weight. The third is to round the spoon in the middle of a long recipe. Keep the decimals until the end, then round once. The fourth is an old or odd spoon with no mark. Use a measuring spoon or a mL-marked cup for anything that matters.
Who uses milliliters to tablespoons
Cooks using a recipe that lists mL in a kitchen that has only spoons. People reading a bottle or a sachet and wanting a kitchen unit. Bakers scaling a batch. If you need teaspoons instead, use ML to teaspoons. For fluid ounces use ML to oz. For the spoon-to-spoon count see Tablespoons to teaspoons.

Is this accurate for medicine?
It is maths. It is not dosing advice. For medicine, use the dose and the measuring device that come with it.
