Nickname generator, for you or a friend.

Type a first name to get its short forms and nicknames built around it, or leave the box empty for random ones. Pick cute, cool, funny, gamer or tough, write them as one word or with an underscore for a username, and set a maximum length. Click a nickname to copy it, and star the ones you like to keep them in this browser. The word lists are written by hand and every name is checked, with no AI and no sign-up.

Press Enter in the name box to make a new set. Nothing here is saved on a server.

Made in your browser from lists on this page. Nothing is sent anywhere.

    How it works

Hand-written lists, put together by rules.

    01 / Short forms

    Real short forms first

A table of 100 common first names holds their traditional short forms. Any other name is cut by simple rules.

    02 / Styles

    Five styles

Cute, cool, funny, gamer and tough each have their own words and patterns, with your name worked in.

    03 / Checked

    Kept friendly

The lists hold no rude words, and anything built from a typed name is checked before it is shown.

    Guide

How to pick a nickname, with examples.

A nickname generator gives you names to use instead of, or beside, your real one: for a friend, a pet, a team chat or a gaming account. This one works two ways. Type your first name and it builds nicknames around it. Leave the name empty and it makes random ones from word lists. Everything is made in your browser, and each press of New nicknames gives a new set.

How to use the nickname generator

    1. Type your first name in Your first name, or leave it empty for random nicknames.
    2. Pick a Style. Short forms of my name gives the usual short versions of a name, and the other styles add words to it.
    3. Choose How many to show: 12, 24 or 48.
    4. Under Write them as, pick One word, With underscore or Lowercase if the nickname is going to be a username. Use Longest if a site limits the length.
    5. Click a nickname to copy it. Click the star next to it to save it under Saved on this device. Press New nicknames for another set.

    Short forms of a name

For 100 common first names, the generator has a table of the traditional short forms. A few of them:

    NameShort forms
AlexanderAlex, Lex, Xander, Zander, Sandy, Al
ElizabethLiz, Lizzie, Beth, Betty, Eliza, Libby, Ellie
    RobertRob, Robbie, Bob, Bobby, Bert
    WilliamWill, Bill, Billy, Liam
KatherineKate, Katie, Kathy, Kat, Cathy, Kitty
    MargaretMaggie, Meg, Peggy, Marge
    TheodoreTheo, Ted, Teddy

The table lists Katherine, Catherine and Kathryn together, and does the same for spellings such as Stephen and Steven. For a name that is not in the table, the generator cuts the start of the name, adds y or ie, and tries the first syllable. Roberto, for example, becomes Rob, Roby and Robie. Rule-made forms are guesses, so try several and keep the ones that sound like you.

    What each style does

    • Cute pairs a soft word with a small thing, such as Sunny Pebble, or adds an ending to your name, such as Mayaboo or Maya Muffin.
    • Cool mixes a dark or bright word with an animal or a job, such as Midnight Falcon, or adds a title to your name, such as Agent Maya.
    • Funny gives a title to a snack, such as Captain Noodle, or stretches your name: Mayainator, Maya the Unbothered.
    • Gamer joins words without a space, such as PixelRaven, and adds tags to your name, such as Maya_Prime or Maya47.
    • Tough joins a strong word to a strong thing, such as Iron Bear, or Big Maya.

Using a nickname as a username

Most sites do not allow spaces in a username. Set Write them as to One word or With underscore, and set Longest to the limit the site gives. Check whether the name is already taken on the site you want. This page cannot see other sites, so it cannot tell you. If you need random handles with numbers, the username generator is built for that.

    Common problems

    • No results with a short Longest setting: lower the limit only a little, or switch Write them as to One word, which removes spaces.
    • The same nickname twice in a row: each set is random, so press New nicknames again.
    • A short form you expected is missing: the table holds the usual ones only, and there is no way to cover every name. Use the cute or cool style on your name, or choose from the rule-made forms.

    Questions

    Good to know.

How do I make a nickname from my name?

Type your first name, pick Short forms of my name for the usual short versions, or pick a style to add words to it. Click a nickname to copy it.

    Does it use AI?

No. The words come from hand-written lists on this page and are put together by simple rules, with a random choice each time. It never asks an AI model.

Can it make a nickname without my name?

Yes. Leave the name box empty and every style makes random nicknames from its word lists. Short forms of my name needs a name, so that style asks for one.

Are the nicknames checked for rude words?

The word lists are written without rude words, and anything built from a name you type is checked against a list of stems first. A name that would make one of them is left out. No list is perfect, so look at a nickname before you use it.

Can I use the nickname as a username?

Yes. Choose One word or With underscore, and set the Longest length. This page cannot check whether the name is free on a site, so look there.

Where are my saved nicknames kept?

In this browser only, under Saved on this device. They are not sent anywhere, and Clear saved removes them.

Is there a limit on how many I can make?

No. Press New nicknames as often as you like. There are no ads and no sign-up.

Does it work for any name, in any language?

It works for letters A to Z. Accents are removed, so José becomes Jose. The short forms table is for English first names, and other names get rule-made forms.
