Spectrogram, see what you hear.

Drop a song, a voice recording or a video and see its spectrogram: time from left to right, pitch from bottom to top, loudness as colour. Play it and a line follows along; point anywhere to read the time and frequency. Or switch on the microphone and watch your voice, a whistle or a room hum draw live. Change the scale and colours, and save the picture.

Reading it

Lines, smudges and gaps.

01 / Voices

Stacked lines

A voice or an instrument shows as a stack of bright lines: the lowest is the note, the rest are its harmonics.

02 / Noise

Smudges

Hiss, wind and breath show as wide smudges; a hum shows as a flat line, often at 50 or 60 Hz and above.

03 / Cuts

Gaps and edges

Silence is dark; a hard cut in an edit shows as a sharp vertical edge.

Questions

Good to know.

What is a spectrogram?

A picture of a sound: time runs left to right, frequency (pitch) bottom to top, and the colour shows how loud each frequency is at each moment.

Linear or logarithmic?

Logarithmic spreads the low notes out the way hearing does, so voices and music are easier to read. Linear shows high frequencies in more detail.

Can it read video files?

Yes, it analyses the sound of most MP4, MOV and WebM files.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The analysis happens in your browser.
