Best teleprompter apps for Mac

A teleprompter app scrolls your script while you look at the camera. Here are four Mac options and a free browser one, with what each costs, what the free version limits and who should skip it.

Short answer: if you want to try one with no cost, start with the free browser teleprompter on this site, or with Teleprompter Pro+ from the Mac App Store, which is free to download with in-app purchases. If you want a one-time, low price native app, Virtual Teleprompter Pro is $6.99. For a stage or a studio with two screens, Presentation Prompter is built for it, at $99.99. For a teleprompter inside a video platform, look at Teleprompter.com.

All prices, limits and macOS versions below come from each maker's own page or its Mac App Store listing, checked on 26 October 2026. Where a page did not say, this post writes "not found". Prices can change, so check the page before you buy.

What to decide before you pick

A teleprompter app is simple. The differences are in four places, so decide these first.

  1. Where you will read. On the same Mac you record on, on a second screen next to the camera, or on a phone below the lens.
  2. Whether you need to record. Some tools only scroll text. Others also record you.
  3. How it scrolls. A fixed speed you set, or voice-controlled scrolling that follows you. Only some apps do the second.
  4. Whether you pay once or monthly. A single payment suits an occasional speaker. A monthly plan suits a team.

The free browser teleprompter

This one is ours: the free online teleprompter on motionshine.com, made by the maker of MotionShine. Its page says you paste a script or open a text file, set the speed in words a minute (the slider goes from 60 to 260, default 140), set the text size and width, and read it full screen. Options include a three second countdown, mirrored text for teleprompter glass and dark text on white. Space plays or pauses, and the arrow keys change speed and size.

It can also show your camera faintly behind the words and record video and sound while you read. The page says the recording is the camera picture only, up to 1920 x 1080, saved as MP4 (H.264) where your browser can record MP4 and WebM otherwise, and that the script is not in the video. The script is saved in your browser and is never uploaded. The recording stays in the tab until you download it.

Keep it if you want to start in a minute, with nothing to install. Skip it if you need voice-controlled scrolling, a remote control from another device or a script library: its page lists none of those.

Teleprompter Pro+ (Teleprompter Premium)

The Mac App Store listing is named Teleprompter Pro+ and its version history mentions a rename to Teleprompter Pro. The developer is Teleprompter Apps Ltd. It is free to download with in-app purchases, and it requires macOS 12.0 or later. The listing shows purchase options from $3.99 up to $159.99 and mentions a Premium subscription at $14.99 a year after a free trial. It does not say which purchase is which, so check inside the app.

The description lists importing PDF, TXT and RTF files, mirrored text, remote control by keyboard, handheld remote or game controller, a transparent window mode for recording and streaming, a countdown, timed scrolling, cue points, and control from a browser on the same Wi-Fi network.

Keep it if you want a feature-rich native app and you can live with in-app purchases. Skip it if you want one clear price: the listing's prices are hard to match to features.

Virtual Teleprompter Pro

This Mac-only app is $6.99 and requires macOS 12.0 or later, per its listing. The listing mentions adjustable speed, font size and colours, manual scrolling, text mirroring, a speech library for saving several scripts, a timer you can hide, and that it runs with no internet connection. It is listed as compatible with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex, GoToMeeting, BlueJeans and YouTube Live.

Keep it if you read on calls or while streaming and want a small one-time price. Skip it if you want voice-controlled scrolling or a built-in recorder: the listing mentions neither.

Presentation Prompter

The Mac App Store lists it at $99.99 from Ripeware, LLC, and it requires macOS 10.15 or later. Its listing describes dual-screen prompting with an option to flip the script for mirror enclosures, GPU-accelerated smooth scrolling, a clock and remaining-time estimate, bookmarks, and support for a keyboard, trackpad or dedicated remote. It imports MS Word and other common formats.

Keep it if you present on a stage or work with a second screen and a physical remote. Skip it if you record at your desk: you would pay for features you will not use.

Teleprompter.com

Teleprompter.com's pricing page lists a free Starter plan, Pro at $19.99 per seat monthly or $7.50 a month billed yearly (which is $90 a year), Max, and a Team plan. The Starter plan lists macOS and web access. On Starter, exports have a watermark and are capped at 1080p. 4K recording, horizontal and vertical mirroring and remote preview on another device start at Pro. The page shows voice-activated scrolling with a check on all four plans, including Starter. The page also has a couple of numbers that do not quite add up (for example, a "Save $200" label on Max), so read the page itself before you subscribe.

Keep it if you want a teleprompter and a recorder in one place and a subscription suits you. Skip it if you want no watermark without paying: the free plan adds one to exports.

Which setup works for a video on your Mac

  • Recording yourself at your desk. Put the script as close to the camera as you can, with narrow text. The browser teleprompter page suggests this, so your eyes stay near the lens. Start your recording first, then start the prompter.
  • On a call. An app with a transparent window, like Teleprompter Pro+ or Virtual Teleprompter Pro, keeps the text near the camera while you see the other people.
  • With a screen recording and a camera. Read from a second display or a phone below the camera, so the prompter does not cover the thing you are showing.

Write the script first. The tutorial video script template gives a format that is easy to read aloud. To see how long a script runs at your pace, the words to minutes tool does the sum. For the camera side, see how to record your webcam on a Mac.

Where MotionShine fits

This is by the maker of this site. MotionShine is a free Mac screen recorder that records your display, a window or an area and your camera: camera only, screen only, or both with a movable camera bubble. It is not a teleprompter and has no script scrolling. It fits after you have read your script: it adds auto zoom, a smooth cursor and click effects, and its editor has text, picture and music lanes, voice over and captions made on your Mac. The free version exports up to 720p at 30 fps with no watermark and no time limit. Pro unlocks 1080p, 1440p, 4K and 60 fps. Skip it if all you need is the prompter.

FAQ

What is the best free teleprompter app for Mac?

The free browser teleprompter on this site needs no install and has no paywall. Teleprompter Pro+ is free to download but sells in-app purchases. Teleprompter.com has a free plan, but exports carry a watermark.

Can a teleprompter app record me?

Some can. The browser teleprompter on this site records your camera and microphone in the tab. Teleprompter.com lists camera recording. Teleprompter Pro+ and Virtual Teleprompter Pro describe a transparent window so you can record with another app.

Does a Mac teleprompter scroll with my voice?

Teleprompter.com lists voice-activated scrolling on all plans. The other listings above do not mention it, so it is "not found" for them.

How fast should a teleprompter scroll?

The browser teleprompter defaults to 140 words a minute. Read the first paragraph aloud and adjust until the text keeps pace with you. That is the way the tool's page describes finding your speed.

Can I use a teleprompter on Zoom?

Virtual Teleprompter Pro lists compatibility with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and others. A browser teleprompter on a second display also works, as long as it is near your camera.

Should I buy a physical teleprompter?

That is outside what these pages cover. A mirror-style rig works with the apps that offer mirrored text. For a desk setup, an app on a screen near the camera is where most people start.

Make your next recording look finished.

MotionShine is free for good, with every feature. Pay only if you want bigger exports.
