How to paste a screenshot on a Mac

To paste a screenshot, copy it to the clipboard first, then press Command-V where you want it. Here is the key combo, what to do when you already have a file, and why paste sometimes does nothing.

Short answer: hold Control while you take the screenshot, for example Control-Shift-Command-3 for the whole screen. The picture goes to the clipboard instead of a file. Then click where you want it, in an email, a chat or a document, and press Command-V.

The Control step comes from Apple Support's page "Take screenshots or screen recordings on Mac", checked on 26 October 2026. The page says to press and hold Control while you press the other keys, and gives Control-Shift-Command-3 as its example. It shows no publish date. It does not describe pasting, so the Command-V step is the normal Mac paste shortcut and not a quote from that page.

Copy a screenshot, then paste it

  1. Take the screenshot with Control held.
  2. Whole screen: Control-Shift-Command-3
  3. A selected area: Control-Shift-Command-4, then drag over the part you want
  4. Click where it should go. An email, a message box, a Pages or Word document, a Slides page.
  5. Press Command-V. The picture appears.

Apple's page lists Control-Shift-Command-3 as the example. The same Control rule applies to the other shortcuts on the page, and the full list is in Mac screenshot shortcuts. Because the image goes to the clipboard, no file is saved to your desktop.

Copy from the thumbnail instead

After a screenshot, a small thumbnail shows in the corner of the screen. Apple's page says you can Control-click it and choose Save to Clipboard from the menu. Then paste with Command-V. This is useful when you already took the screenshot and forgot to hold Control.

You already have the file on your desktop

Apple's page says shortcut screenshots are saved to the desktop. You have two easy choices:

  • Drag the file straight into the email, chat or document.
  • Open it and copy it. Double-click the file to open it in Preview, press Command-A then Command-C, and paste with Command-V. This works because Preview treats the picture like any other image. It is our tip, not a step from Apple's page.

When Command-V does nothing

  • The place does not accept pictures. A plain text field, such as a search bar, cannot hold an image. Paste into a rich text box, a document or a chat message.
  • You forgot Control. Without it the screenshot became a file, so the clipboard still holds your last copied item. Check the desktop.
  • You copied something else after. The clipboard keeps only the latest item. Copy the screenshot again.
  • The shortcut did not work at all. If no screenshot is made, see Mac screenshot not working.

Paste a screenshot into a recording or a guide

If you are writing steps, paste your screenshots into a document one by one, and crop them first. How to crop a screenshot on Mac shows how, and how to blur text in a screenshot covers private details. For steps that move, a short screen recording shows more than a picture. MotionShine is a free Mac screen recorder with auto zoom and a smooth cursor, by the same team as this blog. It makes video, so it is not a screenshot tool.
