Short answer: first press Shift-Command-5. If the Screenshot toolbar opens, your Mac can capture, and the problem is the shortcut or the save location. Open System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, Screenshots to check the shortcuts, and use Options in the toolbar to see where files go. Checked on 24 October 2026 on Apple Support's "Take screenshots or screen recordings on Mac".
Apple's page has almost no troubleshooting. Where a fix comes from Apple, it says so. Where it is general advice, it says that too.
The nine fixes
1. Use the toolbar to test (Apple's shortcut)
Press Shift-Command-5. If the toolbar opens, capture works. Click the whole screen or a selected portion button, then Capture. This also tells you the problem is the shortcut, not the Mac.
2. Check the shortcuts are on (Apple's setting)
Apple's page says shortcuts can be changed in System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, Screenshots. Make sure each one has a checkmark and the keys you expect. The usual ones are in Mac screenshot shortcuts.
3. Look at where files go (Apple's setting)
In the toolbar, click Options and read Save to. A shot can be fine but saved in another folder. Apple's page says shortcut screenshots go to your desktop by default.
4. Check whether you copied it instead
Holding Control with a screenshot shortcut copies the shot to the clipboard and makes no file. If you pressed Control by accident, paste with Command-V to find it.
5. Try a different app or window (Apple's note)
Apple's page says you may not be able to take pictures of windows in some apps, such as DVD Player. A blank or failed capture of one app, with others fine, is that.
6. Check the keys
If Shift-Command-3 does nothing, try Shift-Command-4 or 5. If only one combination fails, a key may be the issue. This is general advice.
7. Free some disk space
A full disk can stop files from saving. This is general advice, not from Apple's page.
8. Look for other apps using the same shortcut
Cloud backup or screenshot tools can set their own screenshot shortcuts. One Apple Community thread reported this with several sync apps. Check their preferences, or quit them and test again. This is a community report, not an Apple instruction.
9. Restart the Mac
A restart clears many stuck states. This is general advice. After it, repeat fix 1.
What Apple's Options menu controls
Most "not working" cases are really "working, but not where I looked". Apple's screenshot page lists these items under Options in the Shift-Command-5 toolbar:
- Save to: a preset location or Other Location. If this is the clipboard or a folder you forgot, your shots are not on the desktop.
- Timer: a delay before the capture starts. If it is set, the shot happens late and it can feel like nothing happened.
- Show Floating Thumbnail: turn it on to see the corner preview after each shot. With it off, a working capture gives you no visual sign.
- Remember Last Selection: keeps your portion box for next time. If your captures come out the wrong size, this may be why.
- Show Mouse Pointer: decides whether the pointer is in the shot.
- Capture Format: HDR or SDR.
Apple also says screenshots are .png files named "Screenshot" plus the date and time. Search for that word in Finder if you cannot spot the file.
Other shortcuts to try while one is failing
Apple's page lists a few more routes that do not depend on Shift-Command-3 or 4:
- Window or menu bar: press Shift-Command-4, then Space bar, move the camera pointer over the window and click.
- Touch Bar: Shift-Command-6 on Macs with a Touch Bar.
- Spotlight: Apple says you can open the Screenshot app from Spotlight if the keyboard route fails. Then use its buttons.
Two other guides we read on 24 October 2026 (Setapp and iGeeksBlog) also suggest taking a shot from Preview's File menu as a workaround. That is community advice, and Apple's page does not mention it.
Fixes other guides suggest, not from Apple
The top results for this problem add steps that Apple's page does not list. Treat them as general advice, and try them only after the settings checks above.
- Install pending macOS updates. A normal step when a system feature misbehaves.
- Quit the screenshot process in Activity Monitor so macOS starts it again. Setapp suggests this. We have not confirmed it ourselves.
- Start in Safe Mode to see whether a recently installed app interferes. Two guides suggest it.
- Reset NVRAM on Intel Macs. Mentioned by two guides. They say Apple silicon Macs do this on their own. We did not check that.
- Scan for malware. Setapp lists it. It is a last step, not a first one.
If none of this helps and even the Shift-Command-5 toolbar will not open, contact Apple Support, since a rare hardware cause is possible. That last line is general advice.
How to tell which fix you need
Run the tests in this order, because each answer removes a cause.
- Press Shift-Command-5. Toolbar opens: your Mac can capture. Go to the save location and shortcut fixes.
- Click Capture in the toolbar. A floating thumbnail appears in the bottom-right corner for a few seconds if Show Floating Thumbnail is on in Options, as Apple's page describes. If it appears, the shot worked, so look for the file.
- Try Shift-Command-4. If it works and Shift-Command-3 does not, check that one shortcut in the Screenshots list.
- Try a different app. If only one app fails, it blocks capture.
If nothing opens at all, not even the toolbar, go to fixes 8 and 9, then look at the Screenshots list again.
Quick table
| Symptom | Try |
|---|---|
| Shortcut does nothing | 1, 2, 6, 8, 9 |
| File missing | 3, 4, 7 |
| One app will not capture | 5 |
After the shot works
To trim a capture, the free image cropper runs in your browser. To hide text first, see how to blur text in a screenshot. If you also record your screen, MotionShine, by the maker of this site, is a free Mac screen recorder with a full editor. It does not take screenshots as a main job, so skip it if stills are all you need.
