Short answer: in a current PowerPoint for Mac, click Record in the top right corner, choose from the beginning or from the current slide, turn the microphone on, click the record button and talk through your slides. When you finish, choose Record, then Export to video to make a video file. If your PowerPoint cannot do that, record the slideshow with a screen recorder, or move the deck into Keynote and use Record Slideshow.
The PowerPoint steps come from Microsoft Support's article "Record a slide show with narration and slide timings". It lists PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 for Mac, PowerPoint 2024 for Mac and PowerPoint 2021 for Mac. The Keynote steps come from Apple Support's Keynote User Guide page "Record presentations". Both were checked on 26 October 2026. Neither page shows a publish date.
Which way should you pick?
| Your situation | Best route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You have PowerPoint 2021, 2024 or Microsoft 365 for Mac | PowerPoint's own Record | Narration, timings and pen marks stay in the deck, and you can export a video |
| Your PowerPoint is older, or Record is missing | Screen recorder, or Keynote | Microsoft's article lists only the three versions above |
| You want your face next to the slides | PowerPoint's camera option, or a recorder with a camera bubble | Both can show you beside the slide |
| You want a video with zoom and cleanup | Screen recorder plus an editor | You can cut mistakes and zoom into small text afterwards |
| You use Keynote already | Keynote's Record Slideshow | Built in and free on a Mac |
One honest limit: we could not find an official Microsoft page that lists which older PowerPoint for Mac versions lack Record. Microsoft's article only lists the three versions above, so "not found" is the answer for older ones. A university guide we found says PowerPoint for Mac 2016 cannot export narrated videos, but that is a third-party claim, not Microsoft's.
Method 1: record inside PowerPoint for Mac
These are the steps from Microsoft's article for Mac.
- Open your presentation.
- Click Record in the top right corner, or choose Record, then From Beginning or From Current Slide.
- Pick a view: Teleprompter shows your speaker notes as a script, or Presenter view.
- Use the audio and video dropdowns on the recording toolbar to turn the microphone and camera on or off. For voice only, turn the camera off.
- Click record to start. Use pause and resume when you need a break.
- Use Preview Play to review what you recorded.
- Press Esc or click End show to leave. Narration, slide timings and ink are applied to your slides.
Fix a bad slide
Click the trash can button to the left of the record button, then record that slide again. Microsoft's article says Clear Recording removes recordings, and Reset to Cameo keeps your camera style while removing the recording, for one slide or all slides.
Make a video file
Choose Record, then Export to video. Microsoft's article says this makes a shareable video. It also points Mac users to separate articles about saving a presentation as a movie or MP4 and about recording audio in PowerPoint for Mac, so look there if your menu differs. The article does not state microphone requirements for Mac. If the microphone does not work, check the input in System Settings, Sound, and the app's permission in Privacy & Security.
Pen and pointer shortcuts
The article's shortcut table lists Command equivalents for Mac. Command-P changes the pointer to a pen, Command-A changes it to an arrow, and Command-period ends the slide show.
Method 2: record a slideshow in Keynote
Keynote is free on a Mac. You can open a .pptx file in it, but formatting can shift, so check every slide first. Apple's page gives these steps.
- Open the presentation and click the starting slide in the slide navigator.
- Choose Play, then Record Slideshow. The presenter display opens with recording controls at the bottom.
- Click the Start Recording toggle. A three second countdown runs first.
- Press Right Arrow to move to the next slide or build, and Left Arrow to go back.
- Use the Mute button to pause narration. Click it again to resume.
- Click the Start Recording toggle again to stop.
- Click Play to preview. To re-record from a point, drag the playback slider there, click the toggle and choose Record.
- Press Esc to exit.
To play it back, choose Play, then In Fullscreen or In Window. The recording stays with the presentation and plays in Keynote. Apple's page says you can export a recorded presentation as a video or another format, but it does not give those steps. It points to the page "Export to PowerPoint or another file format". We have not confirmed there that narration is included in the video, so check the export result before you send it.
Method 3: record the screen with your voice
A screen recorder works with any presentation program and any PowerPoint version. You play the slideshow, talk, and record both. It is also the best way to show a live demo between slides.
- Put the deck in slideshow mode, or in a window you can record.
- Start the recording and turn on the microphone.
- Present as normal. Pause the recording if you need to.
- Stop, then trim the start and end.
How to screen record on Mac with audio covers the microphone choice and the built in Screenshot app. If the voice is the weak part, record it on its own first, using how to record your voice on a Mac.
MotionShine is a free Mac screen recorder by the maker of this blog. It records a display, window or area and, per its site, your microphone and your Mac's own sound together, with an optional camera bubble. Auto zoom and a smooth cursor help viewers see small text, and the editor has text, pictures, music and voice over. The free version exports up to 720p at 30 fps with no watermark and no time limit. 1080p and above need a paid plan. It needs macOS 13 or later.
It is not the right choice if you need slide timings stored inside the PowerPoint file, because it makes a video, not a changed deck. The deck itself stays as it is.
Tips for a clearer narrated presentation
These are general tips from us, not rules from Microsoft or Apple.
- Write short notes, not a script to read. PowerPoint's Teleprompter view shows your notes, so keep each slide to a few lines.
- Record one slide at a time if you stumble a lot. Both PowerPoint and Keynote let you redo a point.
- Check the sound before the full take. Record ten seconds and play it back. The free mic test shows if your microphone is picked up.
- Keep slides readable. Large text works on a phone screen too.
- Aim for one idea per slide, so a viewer can stop and start at any time.
