Where the factor comes from

The inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters. NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8 marks the inch to centimeter factor as exact (checked 24 Oct 2026). So the sum is clean: the only rounding is the last digit you choose to read.

What a 15 inch screen measures

Laptop and monitor sizes are quoted as the diagonal, from one corner to the opposite corner. A 15 inch diagonal does not mean 15 inches wide. For a 16:9 screen the width is 15 × 16 ÷ √(16² + 9²) = 13.07 inches and the height is 15 × 9 ÷ √(16² + 9²) = 7.35 inches. In centimeters that is 33.21 by 18.68 cm, with a diagonal of 38.1 cm. The 16:9 shape is only an example. Other shapes give other widths for the same diagonal, so use the real ratio from the spec sheet.

Sizes close to 15 inches

Half an inch is 1.27 cm, so each half inch step moves the centimeters by that much. Going from 15 to 16 inches adds exactly 2.54 cm.

Worked examples

• A length of 15 1/2 inches. Type 15 1/2 in the Inches box. 15.5 × 2.54 = 39.37 cm.
• 15 inches cut from a 6 foot board. The board is 72 inches, so 72 − 15 = 57 inches are left. That is 144.78 cm.
• Three pieces of 15 inches. 3 × 15 = 45 inches, which is 114.3 cm or 3 ft 9 in.
• Does a 15 inch item fit a 38 cm gap? The item is 381 mm and the gap is 380 mm, so the item is 1 mm too wide. Going the other way, 38 cm is 14.961 inches.

A quick check in your head

Take the inches, double them, then add half again, and a bit more. 15 doubled is 30, and half of 15 is 7.5, so 37.5. The "bit more" is the missing 0.04 in the factor: 15 × 0.04 = 0.6 cm, and 37.5 + 0.6 = 38.1. Stopping at 2.5 instead of 2.54 leaves you 0.6 cm short, which is 1.6 percent of the answer. That is fine for a rough idea and not fine for a cut.

Mistakes to avoid

The common slip is turning the sum around. 15 cm is not 38.1 inches. It is 5.9055 inches, because a centimeter is the smaller unit. A quick check: the number of centimeters should always be bigger than the number of inches, about two and a half times bigger. The second slip is reading 1 ft 3 in as 1.3 feet.
