Inches to feet converter, decimal feet and feet and inches.

To convert inches to feet, divide the inches by 12. So 12 in is 1 ft, 30 in is 2.5 ft and 100 in is 8.3333 ft. A length is usually wanted as feet and inches, too: 100 in is 8 ft 4 in. This converter gives both, and it reads fractions of an inch, so 37 3/8 in is 3.1146 ft, or 3 ft 1 3/8 in.

How to use the converter

1. Type the length in the Inches (in) box. A fraction works: 37 3/8, 5/8 or 7 1/2.

The definition

NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C says 12 inches (in) = 1 foot (ft). That is a definition, not a measurement, so the conversion is exact: no rounding is hidden in the factor. Page checked 18 Oct 2026. The same appendix says the foot is 0.3048 meter exactly, which makes the inch exactly 2.54 centimeters. Only the last digit you read is rounded, and many answers are a repeating decimal because 12 does not divide most numbers: 100 in is 8.33333333 ft.

A mental method and its error

Count in dozens. 100 in holds 8 twelves, which is 96, with 4 over, so it is 8 ft 4 in. The inches left over are always 0 to 11, which is a quick check on your own sum. For the decimal, halve the inches, halve again, then divide by 3: for 90 in that is 45, then 22.5, then 7.5 ft. A second way is to divide by 10 and take off a sixth of that: 100 gives 10, minus 1.667, which is 8.3333 ft. Both are exact, because 12 is a definition, so the error is zero. The only way to go wrong is to slip a place, so check that the answer is about a twelfth of the number you started with.

Worked examples

• 100 in. 100 ÷ 12 = 8.3333 ft. There are 8 twelves in 100, and 96 is 8 ft, so 4 in are left: 8 ft 4 in.
• 66 in. 66 ÷ 12 = 5.5 ft, which is 5 ft 6 in.
• 37 3/8 in. That is 37.375 in. 37.375 ÷ 12 = 3.1146 ft, or 3 ft 1 3/8 in.
• A 96 in board. 96 ÷ 12 = 8 ft, which is 2.67 yards.
• A 54 in curtain drop. 54 ÷ 12 = 4.5 ft, or 4 ft 6 in. In centimeters it is 137.16 cm.

The mistake: decimal feet are not inches

5.5 ft is not 5 ft 5 in or 5 ft 50 in. It is 5 ft 6 in, because 0.5 ft is half of 12 inches. The reverse trap is the same: 5 ft 10 in is not 5.10 ft. It is 70 in, which is 5.8333 ft. Use the Feet and inches card to read the answer aloud, and the decimal when a program or a formula needs one number. A second trap is area. A square foot is 12 × 12 = 144 square inches, so to change square inches to square feet you divide by 144, not by 12. A cubic foot is 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728 cubic inches. The table gives inches as decimal feet and as feet and inches. Every row is exact.

Three feet is a yard, so 36 in is 1 yard, and 72 in is 6 ft, or 2 yards. A cut list in inches becomes a shopping list in feet if you round each length up to the next whole foot.

Fractions of an inch

A tape measure marks halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths. If you measure 3 ft 1 3/8 in, enter it as 37 3/8 inches, since 3 × 12 + 1 = 37.
