Guide
How to convert inches to yards, and split the leftover.
To convert inches to yards, divide the inches by 36. So 108 in is 3 yd, 72 in is 2 yd and 18 in is 0.5 yd. A yard has 3 feet of 12 inches, so 3 × 12 = 36. The tool also shows feet, meters and centimeters. The inch is the unit with fractions, so the Inch fractions list in the side column works in the Inches box.
How to use the converter
- Type a length in the Inches (in) box. The Yards (yd) box and the big result follow as you type.
- Look at the cards under the result for the same length in other units. Choose Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- Choose Inch fractions if you want the table to show inches as fractions.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Use Copy result, Copy link, Copy table or Print chart to keep the answer, the ⇄ button to go the other way and Start again to reset.
Where the factor comes from
NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8 lists the yard as exactly 0.9144 m, the foot as exactly 0.3048 m, the inch as exactly 0.0254 m and the statute mile as exactly 1609.344 m (checked 24 Oct 2026). The yard divided by the inch is exactly 0.9144 ÷ 0.0254 = 36.
Whole yards and leftover inches
A decimal like 1.1944 yd is not how a tape reads. To split a length, divide by 36, keep the whole number as yards and multiply the rest by 36. 43 in ÷ 36 = 1.1944, so 1 yard. The rest is 43 − 36 = 7 inches. So 43 in is 1 yd 7 in. A longer one: 100 in ÷ 36 = 2.7778, so 2 yards with 100 − 72 = 28 inches left, and 28 inches is 2 ft 4 in. So 100 in is 2 yd 2 ft 4 in.

Worked examples
- A curtain 90 in long. 2.5 yd, or 2 yd 18 in, which is 2.5 yd.
- Trim of 54 in. 1.5 yd.
- Ten pieces of 8 1/2 in. 85 in, which is 2.3611 yd.
- Metric check. 108 in is 3 yd, which is 2.7432 m exactly.
A quick check in your head
Count in 36s. 36, 72, 108, 144 and 180 inches are 1 to 5 yards. For 100 inches, you pass 72 and stay under 108, so the answer is between 2 and 3 yards, and 2.778 fits. Using feet as a middle step also helps: inches ÷ 12, then ÷ 3.
Write the sum as a unit chain
A unit chain shows why the sum works. Write the length, then a fraction that equals 1 with the unit you want on top: 108 in × 1 yd / 36 in = 3 yd. The in on the left cancels the in under the line, and only yd is left. You can also go through a third unit, feet, in two steps: 108 in × 1 ft / 12 in × 1 yd / 3 ft = 9 ft × 1 yd / 3 ft = 3 yd. Both routes give the same answer, which is a handy check when a factor looks odd. If the wrong unit is left over, the fraction is upside down.
Squares and cubes of the same factor
The factor changes when you convert an area or a volume. Square it for an area and cube it for a volume. The reason is that an area has two lengths in it and a volume has three. Take a square with a side of 108 in. Its side is 3 yd. Its area is 108 × 108 = 11,664 in², and in the other unit it is 3 × 3 = 9 yd². The area factor is the length factor squared.
| Measure | From inches | From yards |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 1 in = 0.027778 yd | 1 yd = 36 in |
| Area | 1 in² = 0.000772 yd² | 1 yd² = 1,296 in² |
| Volume | 1 in³ = 0.000021 yd³ | 1 yd³ = 46,656 in³ |
Mixed units in one measurement
Lengths are often given in two or three units, such as 1 yd 2 ft 5 in. Convert each part to yards, then add. 1 yd stays 1 yd; 2 ft = 0.6667 yd; 5 in = 0.1389 yd. The total is 1.8056 yd. Rounded parts can drift in the last digit, so when the parts are not exact, convert the whole once instead. In inches the same length is 65 in.
The imperial ladder
Read along a row: the row is one of that unit, and each column says how many of the column unit it holds. Exact values are shown in full. Long ones are rounded to five decimals.
| One | Miles | Yards | Feet | Inches |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 mi | 1 | 1,760 | 5,280 | 63,360 |
| 1 yd | 0.00057 | 1 | 3 | 36 |
| 1 ft | 0.00019 | 0.33333 | 1 | 12 |
| 1 in | 0.00002 | 0.02778 | 0.08333 | 1 |
Check by converting back
Type the number 108 in the Inches box and note the answer, 3 yd. Now press the ⇄ button, so the answer becomes the input. It should return 108 in. If it does not, one of the boxes was read wrongly. This takes two seconds and catches a slipped decimal point.
Mistakes to avoid
Dividing by 12 gives feet, not yards. 108 in is 9 ft and 3 yd. And do not write 1 yd 7 in as 1.7 yd. The 7 inches are 7 ÷ 36 = 0.1944 yd. See also inches to feet.
