Guide
How to convert yards to feet, and what changes for area.
To convert yards to feet, multiply the yards by 3. So 10 yd is 30 ft, 4.5 yd is 13.5 ft and 0.5 yd is 1.5 ft. The answer is always the bigger number. The cards also give inches, meters and miles for the same length.
How to use the converter
- Type a length in the Yards (yd) box. The Feet (ft) box and the big result follow as you type.
- Look at the cards under the result for the same length in other units. Choose Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Use Copy result, Copy link, Copy table or Print chart to keep the answer, the ⇄ button to go the other way and Start again to reset.
Where the factor comes from
NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8 lists the yard as exactly 0.9144 m, the foot as exactly 0.3048 m, the inch as exactly 0.0254 m and the statute mile as exactly 1609.344 m (checked 24 Oct 2026). The yard divided by the foot is exactly 3.
Square yards to square feet
Carpet, turf and floor coverings are sold by the square yard in some places and measured in feet in others. A square yard is 3 ft by 3 ft, so it is 9 ft². A lawn 6 yd by 4 yd is 6 × 4 = 24 yd². In feet it is 18 ft by 12 ft, which is 18 × 12 = 216 ft², and 24 × 9 is also 216. Multiplying 24 by 3 would give 72, a third of the true area. The square footage calculator works with the area directly.

| 0.5 yd | 1.5 ft |
| 1 yd | 3 ft |
| 2 yd | 6 ft |
| 3 yd | 9 ft |
| 4.5 yd | 13.5 ft |
| 5 yd | 15 ft |

| 100 yd | 300 ft |
Worked examples
- Cloth of 4.5 yd. 13.5 ft.
- A garden path of 25 yd. 75 ft, or 900 inches.
- A rope of 7 yd 2 ft. Convert the yards: 21 ft plus 2 ft is 23 ft.
- A mile. 1,760 yd is 5,280 ft, which is 1 mile.
A quick check in your head
Triple the yards. For 12 yd, 12 × 3 = 36 ft. For half yards, use one and a half feet per half: 4.5 yd is 4 × 3 + 1.5 = 13.5 ft. A check on a long length: 100 yd is 300 ft, and a mile is 1,760 yd or 5,280 ft, which is 3 × 1,760.
Write the sum as a unit chain
A unit chain shows why the sum works. Write the length, then a fraction that equals 1 with the unit you want on top: 10 yd × 3 ft / 1 yd = 30 ft. The yd on the left cancels the yd under the line, and only ft is left. You can also go through a third unit, inches, in two steps: 10 yd × 36 in / 1 yd × 1 ft / 12 in = 360 in × 1 ft / 12 in = 30 ft. Both routes give the same answer, which is a handy check when a factor looks odd. If the wrong unit is left over, the fraction is upside down.
Mixed units in one measurement
Lengths are often given in two or three units, such as 3 yd 1 ft. Convert each part to feet, then add. 3 yd = 9 ft; 1 ft stays 1 ft. The total is 10 ft. Rounded parts can drift in the last digit, so when the parts are not exact, convert the whole once instead. In yards the same length is 3.3333 yd.
The imperial ladder
Read along a row: the row is one of that unit, and each column says how many of the column unit it holds. Exact values are shown in full. Long ones are rounded to five decimals.
| One | Miles | Yards | Feet | Inches |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 mi | 1 | 1,760 | 5,280 | 63,360 |
| 1 yd | 0.00057 | 1 | 3 | 36 |
| 1 ft | 0.00019 | 0.33333 | 1 | 12 |
| 1 in | 0.00002 | 0.02778 | 0.08333 | 1 |
Check by converting back
Type the number 10 in the Yards box and note the answer, 30 ft. Now press the ⇄ button, so the answer becomes the input. It should return 10 yd. If it does not, one of the boxes was read wrongly. This takes two seconds and catches a slipped decimal point.
Mistakes to avoid
Multiplying an area by 3 instead of 9 is the usual one. A second slip is reading 3 yd 2 ft as 3.2 yd. Two feet is 0.667 yd, so 3 yd 2 ft is 3.667 yd. When a plan mixes yards, feet and inches, convert everything to inches first and add.
