Guide
How to convert meters to yards, and buy by the yard.
To convert meters to yards, divide the meters by 0.9144. So 100 m is 109.36133 yd, 1 m is 1.09361 yd and 2.5 m is 2.734 yd. A meter is a little longer than a yard, so the number of yards is bigger. The cards also show feet, inches, miles and kilometers.
How to use the converter
- Type a length in the Meters (m) box. The Yards (yd) box and the big result follow as you type.
- Look at the cards under the result for the same length in other units. Choose Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Use Copy result, Copy link, Copy table or Print chart to keep the answer, the ⇄ button to go the other way and Start again to reset.
Where the factor comes from
NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8 lists the yard as exactly 0.9144 m, the foot as exactly 0.3048 m, the inch as exactly 0.0254 m and the statute mile as exactly 1609.344 m (checked 24 Oct 2026). So 100 yd is exactly 91.44 m, and 1 m is 1 ÷ 0.9144 yd, a number that does not end.
How much longer is a meter
A meter is 1.0936 yards, which is 9.36 percent longer than a yard. Over 100 units the gap is 9.36, so 100 m is 109.36 yd, not 100. That is why a track or pool marked in meters is longer than the same number of yards. The same gap in feet: a meter is 3.2808 ft, or 39.37 inches.
Buying fabric or rope
If a pattern calls for yards and the shop sells by the meter, convert and round up to the next cut the shop offers. 3 m is 3.281 yd. A pattern for 3.5 yd needs 3.5 × 0.9144 = 3.2004 m. This is a calculation, so follow the pattern's own advice for width and pattern matching.

Worked examples
- A pitch 105 m long. 114.83 yd.
- A rope of 15 m. 16.404 yd, or 49.21 ft.
- 91.44 m. Exactly 100 yd.
- 10 yards back to meters. 9.144 m, 9.144 m exactly.
A quick check in your head
Add one tenth of the meters to the meters, and a little more. 50 m plus 5 is 55 yd, and the true value is 54.68 yd, so the shortcut is 0.32 yd high. That is fine for a rough idea. For anything longer or tighter, use the box.
Write the sum as a unit chain
A unit chain shows why the sum works. Write the length, then a fraction that equals 1 with the unit you want on top: 100 m × 1 yd / 0.9144 m = 109.3613 yd. The m on the left cancels the m under the line, and only yd is left. You can also go through a third unit, feet, in two steps: 100 m × 1 ft / 0.3048 m × 1 yd / 3 ft = 328.0840 ft × 1 yd / 3 ft = 109.3613 yd. Both routes give the same answer, which is a handy check when a factor looks odd. If the wrong unit is left over, the fraction is upside down.
Squares and cubes of the same factor
The factor changes when you convert an area or a volume. Square it for an area and cube it for a volume. The reason is that an area has two lengths in it and a volume has three. Take a square with a side of 100 m. Its side is 109.3613 yd. Its area is 100 × 100 = 10,000 m², and in the other unit it is 109.3613 × 109.3613 = 11,959.9005 yd². The area factor is the length factor squared.
| Measure | From meters | From yards |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 1 m = 1.093613 yd | 1 yd = 0.9144 m |
| Area | 1 m² = 1.195990 yd² | 1 yd² = 0.83612736 m² |
| Volume | 1 m³ = 1.307951 yd³ | 1 yd³ = 0.764555 m³ |
Mixed units in one measurement
Lengths are often given in two or three units, such as 1 yd 1 ft 1 in. Convert each part to yards, then add. 1 yd stays 1 yd; 1 ft = 0.3333 yd; 1 in = 0.0278 yd. The total is 1.3611 yd. Rounded parts can drift in the last digit, so when the parts are not exact, convert the whole once instead. In meters the same length is 1.2446 m.
Metric and imperial side by side
Read along a row: the row is one of that unit, and each column says how many of the column unit it holds. Exact values are shown in full. Long ones are rounded to five decimals.

Check by converting back
Type the number 100 in the Meters box and note the answer, 109.3613 yd. Now press the ⇄ button, so the answer becomes the input. It should return 100 m. If it does not, one of the boxes was read wrongly. This takes two seconds and catches a slipped decimal point.
Mistakes to avoid
Treating a meter as a yard is wrong by nearly 9 percent, because a yard is only 91.44 percent of a meter. Do not use 1.1 as the factor for long distances: 100 m would read 110 yd, against the true 109.36. For feet, see meters to feet.
