Guide
How to convert meters to feet, and where the 3.28 comes from.
To convert meters to feet, multiply the meters by 3.28084. One meter is 3.28084 feet, 10 meters is 32.8084 feet and 100 meters is 328.08399 feet. This converter works it out as you type and also splits the answer into feet and inches, so 1.75 m reads as 5 ft 8.9 in as well as 5.74147 ft.
How to use the converter
- Type a length in the Meters (m) box, for example 25. The big result shows feet.
- Read the cards under it for the same length as Feet and inches, in centimeters, in inches and in yards.
- Type feet in the Feet (ft) box to go the other way. The meters update at once.
- Choose Decimals for a fixed number of places. Auto shows up to five and drops zeros at the end.
- Press Copy result or Copy link to keep the answer. Print chart gives a sheet from 1 m to 1,600 m.
The exact definition
The foot is defined from the meter, not the other way round. NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C states that 1 foot is 0.3048 meter exactly and that 12 inches make a foot. The same table lists 1 meter as 3.280 840 feet, which is the rounded form of dividing 1 by 0.3048. Page checked 18 Oct 2026. So meters to feet is a division by 0.3048, and the answer never ends: 1 m is 3.280839895 ft to ten places. This converter does the sum on exact fractions and rounds only the last digit you see.
A shortcut for the head, and how wrong it is
Multiply by 3, then add a tenth of the answer to itself. That is the same as multiplying by 3.3. For 100 m: 300 + 30 = 330 ft. The exact answer is 328.08 ft, so the shortcut is 1.92 ft high. The factor 3.3 is 0.58 percent above the true 3.28084. If you want a closer one, use 3.28: it is only 0.03 percent low. For a short length like 2 m the shortcut gives 6.6 ft and the true value is 6.56 ft, a gap of 0.04 ft.
Worked examples
- A person 1.75 m tall. 1.75 ÷ 0.3048 = 5.74147 ft, which is 5 ft 8.9 in.
- A 25 m pool. 25 ÷ 0.3048 = 82.02 ft, or 27.34 yards.
- A 400 m running track lap. 400 ÷ 0.3048 = 1,312.34 ft.
- A ceiling 2.4 m high. 2.4 ÷ 0.3048 = 7.87 ft, or 7 ft 10.5 in.
- A flight at 120 m. 120 ÷ 0.3048 = 393.7 ft. A height written as 400 ft is 121.92 m, so the two figures are close but not equal.
A mistake that is easy to make here
The common slip is to read a decimal number of feet as feet and inches. 5.91 ft is not 5 ft 9 in. The part after the point is a fraction of a foot, and one tenth of a foot is 1.2 inches. So 5.91 ft is 5 ft 10.9 in, as the card shows. Use the Feet and inches card when someone asks for a height in feet and inches, and the decimal when a drawing asks for decimal feet. A second slip is to treat a meter as a yard. A meter is 1.0936 yards, about 9 percent longer, so a 100 m dash is 109.4 yards and not 100.
Common lengths in feet
The table gives the exact conversion for lengths that people look up, with feet and inches next to the decimal feet.
| Meters | Feet | Feet and inches |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 m | 4.921 ft | 4 ft 11.1 in |
| 1.6 m | 5.249 ft | 5 ft 3 in |
| 1.7 m | 5.577 ft | 5 ft 6.9 in |
| 1.8 m | 5.906 ft | 5 ft 10.9 in |
| 1.9 m | 6.234 ft | 6 ft 2.8 in |
| 2 m | 6.562 ft | 6 ft 6.7 in |
| 2.5 m | 8.202 ft | 8 ft 2.4 in |
| 3 m | 9.843 ft | 9 ft 10.1 in |
| 5 m | 16.404 ft | 16 ft 4.9 in |
For lengths over a few meters, a feet and inches reading is rarely needed, so use the decimal. A room 4.5 m by 3.2 m is 14.8 ft by 10.5 ft, and its area is 155 square feet. Notice that you square the factor for area: 3.28084 × 3.28084 is about 10.7639, not 3.28084. For areas use the unit converter.
Check the answer by going back
Type the answer into the other box and you should get the meters you started with. By hand: 5.74147 ft × 0.3048 = 1.75 m, which matches 1.75 up to the digits shown. If it does not, check that you did not divide by 3.28 where you meant to multiply. Feet are always the bigger number: a length in feet is about three times the length in meters.
How many decimals to keep
One millimeter is 0.003281 ft, so three decimals of a foot is finer than a tape measure. For a room or a piece of furniture, keep two decimals of a foot, which is 3.05 mm. For a person, use the feet and inches card. For a long race, whole feet are plenty: 1,600 m is 5,249 ft. Set Decimals so every row of the table has the same number of places.
Who uses meters to feet
Travellers reading a height or a depth on a sign. Home buyers comparing a plan in meters with a listing in feet. Pilots and drone flyers who see a height or a distance given in feet. Swimmers and runners comparing a pool or a track with a distance in feet. For the opposite direction see the Feet to meters. For heights by centimeter use the CM to feet, and for long distances the KM to miles converter.
Questions
Good to know.
How many feet are in a meter?
One meter is 3.28084 feet to five places. The exact value is 1 ÷ 0.3048 and has no end.
How many feet is 2 meters?
2 m is 6.5617 ft, or 6 ft 6.7 in.
How tall is 1.8 m in feet and inches?
1.8 m is 5 ft 10.9 in. Look at the Feet and inches card under the result.
How many feet is 100 meters?
100 m is 328.08 ft, or 109.36 yards.
Is the foot defined exactly?
Yes. One foot is exactly 0.3048 meter. The meter is the fixed part and the foot follows from it.
Why is 3.28 sometimes written as 3.281?
They are the same factor rounded differently. The full value is 3.28084 to six places. This page keeps the exact fraction and rounds once.
Meter or metre?
Both are the same unit. Meter is the US spelling used on this page. Metre is the spelling in the UK and most Commonwealth countries.
Does this work for negative lengths?
Yes. A minus sign is accepted, which is handy for depths and heights below a level.
What about square meters to square feet?
The factor is squared: 1 m² is about 10.7639 ft². The unit converter has areas.
