The exact definition

NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C (checked 26 Oct 2026) states 1 mile as 5,280 feet, which is exactly 1,609.344 meters. The older US survey mile is 1,609.347 218 694 meters, about 3 mm longer, and the Handbook says it is no longer used after 2022. This page uses the international mile.

Easy checks

Divide by 1,600 for a quick answer. That is 0.58 percent high, so 5,000 m becomes 3.125 miles against the exact 3.107. To be closer, multiply meters by 0.000621. 5,000 × 0.000621 = 3.105. Or go through kilometers: meters ÷ 1,000, then × 0.6214.

Meters per second in miles per hour

The same factor drives speed. Because a mile is 1,609.344 meters and an hour is 3,600 seconds, 1 m/s is 2.23694 mph. A runner at 5 m/s is doing 11.185 mph. For kilometers per hour use kph to mph.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not read 1,500 m as a mile. Do not mix up a nautical mile (1,852 m) with a statute mile. If your distance is from a GPS, the unit may be kilometers or feet, so check it before you type. For kilometers use km to miles, and for the other small units meters to feet and meters to yards.
