Guide
How to convert m to km, and where a mile sits.
To convert m to km, divide the meters by 1,000. So 2,500 m is 2.5 km, 800 m is 0.8 km and 42 m is 0.042 km. The answer is always the smaller number. The cards show the same distance in miles, yards and feet: 2,500 m is 1.5534 miles.
How to use the converter
- Type a length in the Meters (m) box. The Kilometers (km) box and the big result follow as you type.
- Look at the cards under the result for the same length in other units. Choose Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Use Copy result, Copy link, Copy table or Print chart to keep the answer, the ⇄ button to go the other way and Start again to reset.
Where the factor comes from
The NIST list of metric (SI) prefixes gives kilo as a thousand, centi as a hundredth and milli as a thousandth (checked 24 Oct 2026). A meter is therefore exactly 0.001 km.
The mile in meters
A statute mile is 1,609.344 m exactly, which is 1.609344 km (NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8, checked 24 Oct 2026). Type 1609.344 in the Meters box to see it. People sometimes use 1,600 m or 1,609 m as a short form. 1,600 m is 0.9942 miles, which is a bit under a mile, and 1,609 m is 0.99979 miles. For sums that must match a map, use the exact figure.

Worked examples
- A distance of 3,750 m. 3.75 km.
- A road of 12,300 m. 12.3 km.
- Adding short and long. 450 m plus 1.2 km: 450 m is 0.45 km, so the total is 1.65 km.
- 42,195 m. 42.195 km, which is 26.219 miles.
A quick check in your head
Remove three zeros, or move the decimal point three places to the left. 4,500 m becomes 4.5 km. If the number of meters has fewer than four digits, the answer is below 1 km: 650 m is 0.65 km. And a rough conversion to miles is to multiply the kilometers by 0.62, so 4.5 km is about 2.8 miles (exactly 2.796).
Where you meet it
Maps, running logs and bike computers mix meters and kilometers. A climb of 850 m is 0.85 km, and a daily total of 12,400 m is 12.4 km. When you add several legs, convert each to kilometers first so every number has the same unit.
Write the sum as a unit chain
A unit chain shows why the sum works. Write the length, then a fraction that equals 1 with the unit you want on top: 2,500 m × 0.001 km / 1 m = 2.5 km. The m on the left cancels the m under the line, and only km is left. You can also go through a third unit, centimeters, in two steps: 2,500 m × 100 cm / 1 m × 0.00001 km / 1 cm = 250,000 cm × 0.00001 km / 1 cm = 2.5 km. Both routes give the same answer, which is a handy check when a factor looks odd. If the wrong unit is left over, the fraction is upside down.
Squares and cubes of the same factor
The factor changes when you convert an area or a volume. Square it for an area and cube it for a volume. The reason is that an area has two lengths in it and a volume has three. Take a square with a side of 2,500 m. Its side is 2.5 km. Its area is 2,500 × 2,500 = 6,250,000 m², and in the other unit it is 2.5 × 2.5 = 6.25 km². The area factor is the length factor squared, which is 0.000001.
| Measure | From meters | From kilometers |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 1 m = 0.001 km | 1 km = 1,000 m |
| Area | 1 m² = 0.000001 km² | 1 km² = 1,000,000 m² |
| Volume | 1 m³ = 0.000000001 km³ | 1 km³ = 1,000,000,000 m³ |
Mixed units in one measurement
Lengths are often given in two or three units, such as 1 km 250 m. Convert each part to kilometers, then add. 1 km stays 1 km; 250 m = 0.25 km. The total is 1.25 km. Rounded parts can drift in the last digit, so when the parts are not exact, convert the whole once instead. In meters the same length is 1,250 m.
The metric ladder
Read along a row: the row is one of that unit, and each column says how many of the column unit it holds. Exact values are shown in full. Long ones are rounded to five decimals.
| One | Kilometers | Meters | Centimeters | Millimeters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 km | 1 | 1,000 | 100,000 | 1,000,000 |
| 1 m | 0.001 | 1 | 100 | 1,000 |
| 1 cm | 0.00001 | 0.01 | 1 | 10 |
| 1 mm | 0.000001 | 0.001 | 0.1 | 1 |
Check by converting back
Type the number 2,500 in the Meters box and note the answer, 2.5 km. Now press the ⇄ button, so the answer becomes the input. It should return 2,500 m. If it does not, one of the boxes was read wrongly. This takes two seconds and catches a slipped decimal point.
Mistakes to avoid
Dividing by 100 gives hectometers, so 2,500 m would read 25. Check that the answer looks right for the trip. Another slip is mixing the unit in the title of a map with the unit on a distance sign. For a quick check, 1 km is about 0.62 miles. See also km to miles.
