KM to M converter, kilometers to meters.
Type kilometers and read meters. To change km to m, multiply by 1,000, which moves the decimal point three places to the right. The sum is exact, the swap button goes back, and the cards give miles, feet and yards.

Guide
How to convert km to m, and km/h to m/s.
To convert km to m, multiply the kilometers by 1,000. So 5 km is 5,000 m, 0.25 km is 250 m and 1.5 km is 1,500 m. The converter also shows miles, feet, yards and centimeters for the same distance. 5 km is 3.1069 miles.
How to use the converter
- Type a length in the Kilometers (km) box. The Meters (m) box and the big result follow as you type.
- Look at the cards under the result for the same length in other units. Choose Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Use Copy result, Copy link, Copy table or Print chart to keep the answer, the ⇄ button to go the other way and Start again to reset.
Where the factor comes from
The NIST list of metric (SI) prefixes gives kilo as a thousand, centi as a hundredth and milli as a thousandth (checked 24 Oct 2026). So a kilometer is exactly 1,000 m. The statute mile is a different thing: NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8 gives it as exactly 1.609344 km (checked 24 Oct 2026).
From km/h to m/s
A speed in km/h turns into m/s by the same 1,000, but you also divide by the 3,600 seconds in an hour. 1,000 ÷ 3,600 = 1 ÷ 3.6. So divide km/h by 3.6. A speed of 36 km/h is 36 ÷ 3.6 = 10 m/s, and 90 km/h is 25 m/s. Going the other way, multiply m/s by 3.6. This is why a distance in meters and a time in seconds give a speed in m/s without extra steps.

Worked examples
- A walk of 3.2 km. 3,200 m, or 1.988 miles.
- Laps. If a lap is 400 m, then 5 km is 5,000 ÷ 400 = 12.5 laps.
- A trail of 0.75 km. 750 m, which is 2,460.62992 ft.
- Two legs. 2.4 km plus 850 m: 2.4 km is 2,400 m, so the total is 3,250 m or 3.25 km.
A quick check in your head
Add three zeros, or move the point three places. 2.5 km becomes 2,500 m. For a number with many decimals, say 0.0375 km, write it as 37.5 m: shift the point three places and count again. A good sanity check is that anything under 1 km should have a meter figure under 1,000. 0.0375 km is 37.5 m.
Write the sum as a unit chain
A unit chain shows why the sum works. Write the length, then a fraction that equals 1 with the unit you want on top: 5 km × 1,000 m / 1 km = 5,000 m. The km on the left cancels the km under the line, and only m is left. You can also go through a third unit, centimeters, in two steps: 5 km × 100,000 cm / 1 km × 0.01 m / 1 cm = 500,000 cm × 0.01 m / 1 cm = 5,000 m. Both routes give the same answer, which is a handy check when a factor looks odd. If the wrong unit is left over, the fraction is upside down.
Squares and cubes of the same factor
The factor changes when you convert an area or a volume. Square it for an area and cube it for a volume. The reason is that an area has two lengths in it and a volume has three. Take a square with a side of 5 km. Its side is 5,000 m. Its area is 5 × 5 = 25 km², and in the other unit it is 5,000 × 5,000 = 25,000,000 m². The area factor is the length factor squared, which is 1,000,000.
| Measure | From kilometers | From meters |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 1 km = 1,000 m | 1 m = 0.001 km |
| Area | 1 km² = 1,000,000 m² | 1 m² = 0.000001 km² |
| Volume | 1 km³ = 1,000,000,000 m³ | 1 m³ = 0.000000001 km³ |
Mixed units in one measurement
Lengths are often given in two or three units, such as 2 km 350 m. Convert each part to meters, then add. 2 km = 2,000 m; 350 m stays 350 m. The total is 2,350 m. Rounded parts can drift in the last digit, so when the parts are not exact, convert the whole once instead. In kilometers the same length is 2.35 km.
The metric ladder
Read along a row: the row is one of that unit, and each column says how many of the column unit it holds. Exact values are shown in full. Long ones are rounded to five decimals.
| One | Kilometers | Meters | Centimeters | Millimeters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 km | 1 | 1,000 | 100,000 | 1,000,000 |
| 1 m | 0.001 | 1 | 100 | 1,000 |
| 1 cm | 0.00001 | 0.01 | 1 | 10 |
| 1 mm | 0.000001 | 0.001 | 0.1 | 1 |
Check by converting back
Type the number 5 in the Kilometers box and note the answer, 5,000 m. Now press the ⇄ button, so the answer becomes the input. It should return 5 km. If it does not, one of the boxes was read wrongly. This takes two seconds and catches a slipped decimal point.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not mix kilometers with miles. 5 km is not 5 miles: 5 miles is 8.047 km. And do not move the decimal two places, which gives hectometers. 0.25 km should come out as 250 m, not 25 m. For miles, use the km to miles converter.
