Steps to miles calculator, from your own step.

Turn a number of steps into miles and kilometres, or a distance into steps. It starts from the length of one step, which you can type, measure by walking a number of steps, or work out from your height with a share you choose. Stride factors vary from person to person, and no official figure was found, so the page does not guess one for you. You also get steps in a mile, the time to walk it at a pace you type, and tables by step length, by height and by step count.

The starting numbers are an example, a 30 inch step. Replace them with your own. You can type 5'10" for a height.

Measure once

Your step, your distance.

01 / Measure

Walk 10 steps

Mark a start line, walk 10 natural steps, measure the distance and divide by 10. That is your step length.

02 / Convert

Steps times step length

Steps × one step, in feet, divided by 5,280 gives miles. Divide by 3,280.84 for kilometres.

03 / Time

Distance over pace

Type a pace and the page shows how long that distance takes at it.

Guide

How to convert steps to miles, with your own stride.

To convert steps to miles, multiply the steps by the length of one step, then divide by the length of a mile. A mile is 5,280 feet. With a step of 30 inches, which is 2.5 feet, 10,000 steps cover 25,000 feet, or 4.73 miles. The only number that changes from one person to the next is the step length, so this steps to miles calculator asks for yours rather than guessing it.

How to use the steps to miles calculator

  1. Pick Convert: "Steps to miles and km" or "Miles or km to steps".
  2. Type the Number of steps, or the Distance and its Unit.
  3. Pick where your step length comes from under "My step length comes from": "A step length I know", "I walked a number of steps", or "My height and a share I type".
  4. For "I walked a number of steps", type the Distance walked and the Steps taken. The page divides one by the other.
  5. Type your Height if you like. The page then shows your step as a share of your height.
  6. Type a Walking pace to see the time it takes. Read the result, the steps in a mile and the tables. "Copy result" and "Copy link" keep the answer.

How to measure your own stride

Mark a start line on a flat, clear path. Walk at your normal pace for 10 steps, counting each foot landing as one step, and stop with your feet together. Measure from the start line to the front of your last foot with a tape. Divide by 10. Twenty steps and a divide by 20 smooth out the error even more. A step is one foot landing. A stride in running talk is two steps, so if you have a stride length, halve it to get a step. Step counters on phones and watches count steps.

Why the page does not guess your stride

Some sites quote a fixed share of your height for one step. As of 18 Oct 2026 no official source for one was found, and step length changes with pace, shoes, slope and the person. So the page starts from a step length you know. You can still work from height: type the share yourself. If you measure a step with the walk method and type your height, the page shows your own share, and you can reuse it. Calories are not worked out here, because the page makes no health claims.

Time to walk a distance

Time is distance divided by speed. The Walking pace box takes minutes per mile, minutes per kilometre, miles an hour or kilometres an hour, and turns them all into miles an hour first. A pace of 20 minutes a mile is 60 ÷ 20 = 3 miles an hour. A pace of 12 minutes a kilometre is 5 kilometres an hour, so 5 km takes 60 minutes. The pace is a number you choose, so the time is only as good as that guess.

Using a share of your height

If you know your step and your height, dividing one by the other gives your share, and the "from my height" method can then scale it for other heights. A 70 cm step at 170 cm is 41.2%. At that same share, a height of 180 cm gives 0.412 × 180 = 74.2 cm. Treat this as a rough scaling for one person, since the share changes from person to person. The height table on the page uses whatever share you type.

Worked examples

  • Steps to miles. 10,000 steps of 30 in: 10,000 × 30 = 300,000 in = 25,000 ft. 25,000 ÷ 5,280 = 4.73 miles. In kilometres, 25,000 × 0.3048 = 7,620 m = 7.62 km.
  • Steps in a mile. 63,360 inches in a mile ÷ 30 = 2,112 steps. In a kilometre, 39,370 ÷ 30 = 1,312 steps.
  • Miles to steps. 5 km at 30 in a step: 5 × 1,312.3 = 6,562 steps.
  • Time. 4.73 miles at a pace of 20 minutes a mile: 4.73 × 20 = 94.7 minutes, so 1 h 35 min.
  • A walk test. 10 steps cover 25 ft: 25 ÷ 10 = 2.5 ft = 30 in a step.
  • A share of height. A step of 70 cm and a height of 170 cm: 70 ÷ 170 = 41.2%.

Common problems

  • A phone says a different distance. Phones and watches use their own stride estimate, which may differ from your measured step.
  • Pace changes the step. A brisk walk has longer steps than a slow stroll. Measure at the pace you use.
  • Steps and strides. If you measured a stride, halve it.
  • Units. The page converts feet, metres, yards, inches and centimetres. The miles are international miles of 1,609.344 m.

To change miles into other lengths, use the unit converter. For body measures, the BMI calculator and the TDEE calculator are separate maths tools, not medical advice. The velocity calculator turns a distance and a time into a speed.

Questions

Good to know.

How many steps are in a mile?

It depends on your step length. 63,360 inches in a mile divided by your step in inches. A 30 inch step gives 2,112 steps.

How do I convert steps to miles?

Steps × step length in feet ÷ 5,280. 10,000 steps of 2.5 feet is 4.73 miles.

How do I convert steps to kilometres?

Steps × step length in metres ÷ 1,000. A 30 inch step is 0.762 m, so 10,000 steps is 7.62 km.

How do I measure my step length?

Walk 10 natural steps from a start line, measure the distance, and divide by 10. Use "I walked a number of steps" in the page.

Why is there no fixed height factor?

No official source for one was found (checked 18 Oct 2026), and people differ. You can type your own share in the height method.

What is the difference between a step and a stride?

A step is one foot landing. A stride is two steps, one left and one right. This page works in steps.

Can it turn miles into steps?

Yes. Pick "Miles or km to steps", type the distance, and read the steps.

Does it work out calories?

No. It makes no health or calorie claims. It is distance maths.

Does it show how long the walk takes?

Yes. Type a Walking pace, such as 20 minutes a mile, and the time shows with the result.
