Guide
How to convert miles to feet, and why a mile is 5,280.
To convert miles to feet, multiply the miles by 5,280. So 1 mile is 5,280 feet, 2 miles is 10,560 feet, half a mile is 2,640 feet and a tenth of a mile is 528 feet. The factor is exact, so there is no rounding unless you ask for fewer decimals. This works for the international mile used for roads, running and everyday distance.
How to use the converter
- Type the distance in the Miles (mi) box. The page opens on 1 mile.
- Read feet in the big result. The cards show the same distance in yards, meters and kilometers.
- Fractions work in the box, for example 3/4 for three quarters of a mile. The answer is 3,960 feet.
- Pick Decimals, then use Copy result, Copy link or Print chart. Click a row of Common values to load it.
- Press the swap button (or S) to turn feet back into miles.
Why a mile is 5,280 feet
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C (checked 26 Oct 2026) gives one mile as 5,280 feet, 1,760 yards and exactly 1,609.344 meters, and notes that a mile is also 8 furlongs, 80 chains or 320 rods. A furlong is 660 feet, so 8 × 660 = 5,280. The foot itself is exactly 0.3048 meter, so the mile in meters follows: 5,280 × 0.3048 = 1,609.344.
Race lengths in feet
Races are set in kilometers. The table turns them into miles and then feet, using the exact meters.
| Race | Meters | Miles | Feet |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5K | 5,000 | 3.1069 | 16,404.2 |
| 10K | 10,000 | 6.2137 | 32,808.4 |
| Half marathon | 21,097.5 | 13.1094 | 69,217.5 |
| Marathon | 42,195 | 26.2188 | 138,435 |
The half marathon and marathon lengths are 21.0975 km and 42.195 km. Written the old way, a marathon is 26 miles 385 yards, or 26.21875 miles. That is 42,194.988 m, which is 12 mm under 42.195 km.
Fractions of a mile
| Fraction | Feet | Yards |
|---|---|---|
| 1/8 mile | 660 | 220 |
| 1/4 mile | 1,320 | 440 |
| 1/2 mile | 2,640 | 880 |
| 3/4 mile | 3,960 | 1,320 |
| 1 mile | 5,280 | 1,760 |
A track lap of 400 meters is 1,312.3 feet. Four laps are 1,600 m, about 31 feet short of a mile, and a mile is 4.02336 laps.
Worked examples
- 3.5 miles. 3.5 × 5,280 = 18,480 feet.
- 12 miles. 63,360 feet.
- A 26.21875 mile marathon. 138,435 feet.
- 100 miles. 528,000 feet.
- A runway of 2 miles. 10,560 feet. Runway lengths are usually given in feet or meters, so the sum goes the other way too.
A mental shortcut
Multiply by 5,000, then add 5.6 percent of that. For 3 miles it is 15,000 + 840 = 15,840 feet, which is exact, because 280 is exactly 5.6 percent of 5,000. Rounding the mile to 5,000 feet is quick but 5.3 percent low.
Miles per hour in feet per second
Because a mile is 5,280 feet and an hour is 3,600 seconds, 60 miles per hour is exactly 88 feet every second. A runner who holds an 8 minute mile covers 5,280 ÷ 480 = 11 feet every second. Sums like these are why the number 5,280 comes up in speed, braking distance and pace work.
Planning a fence or a trail marker
A trail with a marker every tenth of a mile has one every 528 feet. A straight fence one mile long is 5,280 feet. With a post every 8 feet that is 5,280 ÷ 8 = 660 gaps and 661 posts, counting both ends. A quarter mile of the same fence is 1,320 feet and 166 posts. This is why fence and trail lengths are often quoted in feet.
Pace in feet per second
If you train by pace, feet per second is the same number seen from the ground. Divide 5,280 by the seconds in your mile.
| Pace per mile | Seconds | Feet per second |
|---|---|---|
| 6:00 | 360 | 14.67 |
| 8:00 | 480 | 11.00 |
| 10:00 | 600 | 8.80 |
| 12:00 | 720 | 7.33 |
| 15:00 | 900 | 5.87 |
Map scales
A map drawn at 1:24,000 turns 1 inch on paper into 24,000 inches on the ground, which is 2,000 feet. So 2.64 inches on that map is a mile. Use inches to feet for the first step and this page for the second.
Other miles that are not 5,280 feet
The nautical mile is 1,852 meters, which is 6,076.115 feet, so it is longer than a statute mile. The old US survey mile uses the survey foot and is 1,609.347 218 694 meters, which is about 3 mm longer than the international mile. The Handbook says the survey foot is retired as of 2023, and this tool uses the international mile.
Vertical distances
Feet and miles also measure height. An airliner at 35,000 feet is 6.629 miles above the ground. That sum is on feet to miles. For yards see miles to yards.
