Guide
How to convert feet to miles, for trails, heights and runways.
To convert feet to miles, divide the feet by 5,280. So 5,280 feet is 1 mile, 1,000 feet is 0.18939 miles and 10,000 feet is 1.89394 miles. You can also multiply by 0.000189394, which is 1 ÷ 5,280 rounded. That never ends: 1 foot is 0.000189393939... mile, with the pair "39" repeating, so each answer is rounded in its last digit only.
How to use the converter
- Type the distance in the Feet (ft) box. The page opens on 10,000 feet.
- Read miles in the big result. The cards show yards, meters and kilometers for the same distance.
- Set Decimals. Two or three is enough for a trail sign, five for an engineering sum.
- Use Copy result, Copy link or Print chart, and click a row of Common values to load it.
- The swap button (or S) turns miles into feet.
Distance across and distance up
Feet and miles measure both how far you go and how high. A trail marked 2,640 feet to the lake is half a mile away. A mountain pass at 10,000 feet above sea level is 1.894 miles up. Both conversions use the same divisor, but mixing them gives a wrong picture. A hike with 3,000 feet of elevation gain over 6 miles climbs 0.568 miles while it travels 6 miles along the ground. The converter changes the unit and has no opinion on direction.
The exact numbers
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C (checked 26 Oct 2026) gives one mile as 5,280 feet, and states it exactly for the international foot (0.3048 m). It also says the US survey foot is retired as of 2023 and lists the survey mile as 1,609.347 218 694 m, against 1,609.344 m for the international mile. The two miles differ by 2 parts per million, which is 1 foot in 500,000. This tool uses the international one.
Common distances
| Feet | Miles | What it could be |
|---|---|---|
| 660 ft | 0.125 | an eighth of a mile, one furlong |
| 1,320 ft | 0.25 | a quarter mile |
| 2,640 ft | 0.5 | half a mile |
| 5,280 ft | 1 | one mile |
| 10,000 ft | 1.89394 | a long runway |
| 26,400 ft | 5 | five miles |
| 35,000 ft | 6.62879 | an airliner cruising height |
The last column is a label for the size of the number, not a fact about any one place.
Worked examples
- 1,000 feet. 1,000 ÷ 5,280 = 0.18939 miles.
- 3,960 feet. 0.75 miles, three quarters of a mile.
- 15,000 feet. 2.8409 miles.
- 50,000 feet. 9.4697 miles.
- 500 feet. 0.0947 miles, or about a tenth of a mile.
A quick check
Remember 5,000 feet is just under a mile. If your answer to 4,000 feet is more than 1, something is wrong; the correct figure is 0.7576 miles. A handy small number: 528 feet is exactly a tenth of a mile.
Mistakes that are specific to feet and miles
Do not divide square feet by 5,280, since that gives nothing useful. For areas see square feet to acres. Do not mix the nautical mile in: 6,076.115 feet make one nautical mile. And watch for feet that are really feet and inches, such as 5'11". Convert that to decimal feet first (5.9167) or use inches to feet.
The other direction is on miles to feet, and in yards on miles to yards.
