Mile pace calculator, pace, time and distance.

A mile pace calculator turns a distance and a time into a pace, or a pace and a distance into a finish time. Fill in any two of pace, time and distance and the third is worked out. You also get min per km, min per mile, mph and km/h in one view, a splits table per mile or per km with the running total, a negative split option and a splits card you can print.

The maths

Pace is time over distance.

01 / Pace

Time divided by distance

A 25 minute 5K is 1,500 seconds over 5 km, which is 300 seconds a km, or 5:00 per km.

02 / Time

Pace times distance

A pace of 8:30 per mile over 10 miles is 85 minutes, or 1:25:00.

03 / Distance

Time divided by pace

45 minutes at 9:00 per mile covers 5 miles.

Guide

How to work out running pace, with checked examples.

A mile pace calculator gives your running pace as the time one mile takes. Pace is time divided by distance, so a 4:00 mile is a pace of 4:00 per mile, which is a speed of 15 mph. This calculator solves for any one of pace, finish time or distance when you give it the other two, and shows the same pace as min per mile, min per km, mph and km/h side by side.

How to use the pace calculator

  1. Under Solve for, choose Pace, Finish time or Distance. The two things you still type stay editable. The one being worked out fills in by itself.
  2. Type the distance, or tap a preset: 400 m, 800 m, 1 mile, 5K, 10K, 10 mile, Half marathon or Marathon. Pick Miles, Kilometres or Metres.
  3. Type your time in Hours, Minutes and Seconds, or your pace in Minutes and Seconds and choose Per mile or km.
  4. Read the cards. They show finish time, distance, pace per mile, pace per km, mph, km/h and a 400 m lap.
  5. Scroll to Splits for the table, choose Splits every mile or kilometre, and press Download splits card (PDF) to print it.

Worked examples, checked by hand

A 4:00 mile. One mile in 240 seconds. An hour has 3,600 seconds, and 3,600 divided by 240 is 15, so the speed is 15 mph. In km/h that is 15 times 1.609344, or 24.14 km/h. Per km the pace is 240 divided by 1.609344, which is 149 seconds, or 2:29.

A 4 hour marathon. A marathon is 42.195 km, which is 26.21875 miles (26 miles and 385 yards). 4:00:00 is 14,400 seconds. 14,400 divided by 26.21875 is 549.2 seconds, so the pace is 9:09 per mile. Divide by 42.195 instead and you get 341.3 seconds, or 5:41 per km.

A 25 minute 5K. 1,500 seconds over 5 km is 300 seconds a km, so 5:00 per km. Times 1.609344 is 482.8 seconds, so 8:03 per mile. The speed is 12.00 km/h, or 7.46 mph.

Solving for time. Choose Finish time, type 10 miles and a pace of 8:30 per mile. 510 seconds times 10 is 5,100 seconds, which is 1:25:00.

Solving for distance. Choose Distance, type 45 minutes and a pace of 9:00 per mile. 2,700 seconds divided by 540 is 5 miles.

Mile pace and km pace

A mile is 1.609344 km exactly, so to turn a pace per km into a pace per mile you multiply by 1.609344, and to go the other way you divide. A pace of 5:00 per km is 8:03 per mile. A pace of 4:00 per km is 6:26 per mile. The small converter near the bottom of the tool does this for min per km, min per mile, mph and km/h, in whichever direction you need.

Splits, even and negative

The splits table lists each mile or kilometre with the split time and the running total. If the distance does not divide evenly, the last row is the short piece at the end. An even pace gives the same split every time.

A negative split means the second half of the race is faster than the first. Choose Negative split and type the difference in seconds per mile or per km. The first half is slower than your average by half that amount and the second half faster by half, so the finish time does not change. For example, a 25:00 5K with a difference of 10 seconds per km runs the first 2.5 km at 5:05 and the last 2.5 km at 4:55. The running totals are 5:05, 10:10, 15:10, 20:05 and 25:00. Positive split does the opposite.

Tips for using the numbers

  • Pace is an average. Hills, wind, heat and stops all move your real pace around it.
  • A GPS watch can read a little long or short, so a watch may show 5.1 km on a certified 5K course. Use the course markers for race pace.
  • Tick Show tenths of a second for track distances such as 400 m and 800 m.
  • Splits are worked out from the exact pace and then rounded, so the totals always add up.

Distances used

The mile is defined as exactly 1,609.344 metres (1,760 yards of 0.9144 m). The marathon is 42.195 km. The half marathon is half of that, 21.0975 km. The 5K and 10K are 5,000 and 10,000 metres, and the track lap is 400 m. The marathon figure is listed for road records by AIMS as 42.195 km (checked 26 Oct 2026).

Speed on its own can be converted with mph to km/h and km/h to mph. To time a run, use the stopwatch. To turn steps into a distance, try the steps to miles calculator.

Questions

Good to know.

How do I calculate my mile pace?

Divide your time by the distance in miles. A 30 minute 5K is 1,800 seconds over 3.107 miles, which is 579 seconds, or 9:39 per mile. Type the distance and time here and the pace is worked out for you.

What is a 4 minute mile in mph?

15 mph. There are 3,600 seconds in an hour and the mile takes 240, and 3,600 divided by 240 is 15. In km/h that is 24.14.

What pace is a 4 hour marathon?

About 9:09 per mile, or 5:41 per km. The marathon is 26.21875 miles, and 14,400 seconds divided by that is 549.2 seconds a mile.

How do I convert min per km to min per mile?

Multiply by 1.609344. A pace of 5:00 per km is 300 seconds, times 1.609344 is 482.8 seconds, which is 8:03 per mile. Use the Pace converter box to do it for any pace.

What is a negative split?

Running the second half of a race faster than the first. Choose Negative split and set how many seconds per mile or km the halves differ by to see each split.

Can I work out my finish time from my pace?

Yes. Under Solve for, choose Finish time, then give the distance and your pace. A 9:00 per mile pace over a half marathon (13.1094 miles) is 1:57:59.

How do I find the distance I ran?

Choose Distance under Solve for, then type your time and your average pace. Time divided by pace is the distance.

Can I print the splits?

Yes. Press Download splits card (PDF). It makes a card in A4 or US Letter with the splits in miles, kilometres or both, to fold up or tape to your wrist.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser. The last numbers you used are kept in this browser only, so they are there next time.
