M to CM converter, meters to centimeters.
Type meters and read centimeters. To change m to cm, multiply by 100, which moves the decimal point two places to the right. The sum is exact, the swap button goes the other way, and the cards give inches and feet.

Guide
How to convert m to cm, and check a room plan.
To convert m to cm, multiply the meters by 100. So 1.75 m is 175 cm, 2.4 m is 240 cm and 0.05 m is 5 cm. The answer is always the bigger number. The converter also gives millimeters, inches, feet, and feet and inches.
How to use the converter
- Type a length in the Meters (m) box. The Centimeters (cm) box and the big result follow as you type.
- Look at the cards under the result for the same length in other units. Choose Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Use Copy result, Copy link, Copy table or Print chart to keep the answer, the ⇄ button to go the other way and Start again to reset.
Where the factor comes from
The NIST list of metric (SI) prefixes gives kilo as a thousand, centi as a hundredth and milli as a thousandth (checked 24 Oct 2026). So a meter is exactly 100 cm. The meter is the base unit here, which is why centi means a hundredth of it.
Room and ceiling sizes
Plans and shop listings often give meters with decimals, while a tape measure or a cutting list uses centimeters. A ceiling 2.4 m high is 240 cm, a hallway 0.9 m wide is 90 cm. The table lists useful sizes.
| Meters | Centimeters |
|---|---|
| 0.5 m | 50 cm |
| 0.75 m | 75 cm |
| 0.9 m | 90 cm |
| 1 m | 100 cm |
| 1.2 m | 120 cm |
| 1.5 m | 150 cm |
| 1.75 m | 175 cm |
| 2 m | 200 cm |
| 2.4 m | 240 cm |
| 3 m | 300 cm |
Length is not volume
Times 100 is for length. A box 0.5 m by 0.4 m by 0.3 m holds 0.5 × 0.4 × 0.3 = 0.06 m³. In centimeters the box is 50 by 40 by 30, which is 60,000 cm³. The factor for volume is 100 × 100 × 100 = 1,000,000, so 0.06 m³ is 60,000 cm³. Multiplying a volume by 100 gives a number that is 10,000 times too small.
Worked examples
- A room 3.2 m by 4.5 m. 320 cm by 450 cm.
- A shelf 0.825 m wide. 82.5 cm, or 83 cm rounded.
- A pole 2.15 m long. 215 cm, which is 84.65 inches.
- Half a meter. 50 cm.
Where you meet it
Listings for fabric, curtains and rugs may give meters, while a tape measure used at home may be marked in centimeters. A 2.2 m curtain drop is 220 cm, and a 1.4 m wide rug is 140 cm. Convert once, write the centimeters down, and use that number for every later step.
Write the sum as a unit chain
A unit chain shows why the sum works. Write the length, then a fraction that equals 1 with the unit you want on top: 1.75 m × 100 cm / 1 m = 175 cm. The m on the left cancels the m under the line, and only cm is left. You can also go through a third unit, millimeters, in two steps: 1.75 m × 1,000 mm / 1 m × 0.1 cm / 1 mm = 1,750 mm × 0.1 cm / 1 mm = 175 cm. Both routes give the same answer, which is a handy check when a factor looks odd. If the wrong unit is left over, the fraction is upside down.
Squares and cubes of the same factor
The factor changes when you convert an area or a volume. Square it for an area and cube it for a volume. The reason is that an area has two lengths in it and a volume has three. Take a square with a side of 1.75 m. Its side is 175 cm. Its area is 1.75 × 1.75 = 3.0625 m², and in the other unit it is 175 × 175 = 30,625 cm². The area factor is the length factor squared, which is 10,000.
| Measure | From meters | From centimeters |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 1 m = 100 cm | 1 cm = 0.01 m |
| Area | 1 m² = 10,000 cm² | 1 cm² = 0.0001 m² |
| Volume | 1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³ | 1 cm³ = 0.000001 m³ |
Mixed units in one measurement
Lengths are often given in two or three units, such as 3 m 7 cm. Convert each part to centimeters, then add. 3 m = 300 cm; 7 cm stays 7 cm. The total is 307 cm. Rounded parts can drift in the last digit, so when the parts are not exact, convert the whole once instead. In meters the same length is 3.07 m.
The metric ladder
Read along a row: the row is one of that unit, and each column says how many of the column unit it holds. Exact values are shown in full. Long ones are rounded to five decimals.
| One | Kilometers | Meters | Centimeters | Millimeters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 km | 1 | 1,000 | 100,000 | 1,000,000 |
| 1 m | 0.001 | 1 | 100 | 1,000 |
| 1 cm | 0.00001 | 0.01 | 1 | 10 |
| 1 mm | 0.000001 | 0.001 | 0.1 | 1 |
Check by converting back
Type the number 1.75 in the Meters box and note the answer, 175 cm. Now press the ⇄ button, so the answer becomes the input. It should return 1.75 m. If it does not, one of the boxes was read wrongly. This takes two seconds and catches a slipped decimal point.
Mistakes to avoid
Multiplying by 10 gives decimeters and multiplying by 1,000 gives millimeters. A 2.4 m ceiling should be 240 cm, not 24 or 2,400. If you are filling a cutting list, write the unit on each line. For feet, see meters to feet.
