Guide

US federal holidays, with the rules and the dates.

The US federal holidays are the days most federal employees have off. Every year there are eleven, and this page works out the dates for any year from 1970 to 2200, shows them as a list and as a calendar of all twelve months, and lets you download the year as a one page PDF. For 2026 the first is Thursday 1 January and the last is Friday 25 December. The strip at the top counts the days to the next one.

How to use the calendar

  1. Type a Year, or use Previous year and Next year.
  2. Read the list for the rule, the date and the day off. In the calendar, a filled purple day is a day off, a ring marks a holiday date that moved because it was on a weekend, and the yellow outline is today.
  3. Pick Sunday or Monday as the first day of the week.
  4. Click Download PDF for a landscape page, on Letter or A4, with the twelve months and the list. Copy list copies the holidays as text, and Copy link opens the same year.

The 2026 federal holidays

The dates come from the Office of Personnel Management list (OPM federal holidays, checked 24 Oct 2026). OPM gives dates rather than rules, so the rules below were read from its 2026 and 2027 dates, and this page's results match every one of them.

Two days moved off a weekend in 2026. Independence Day, 4 July, is a Saturday, so the day off is Friday 3 July. OPM says that when a holiday falls on a Saturday, the Friday before is treated as the holiday for pay and leave, and when it falls on a Sunday, the Monday after is.

In 2027, Juneteenth is on a Saturday, Independence Day is on a Sunday and Christmas is on a Saturday. They are observed on Friday 18 June, Monday 5 July and Friday 24 December. By the same rule, New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so its day off is Friday 31 December 2027, which sits in the 2027 calendar.

Long weekends and breaks

The page lists every run of three or more days off in a row that holds a federal holiday. In 2026 there are eight: 17 to 19 January, 14 to 16 February, 23 to 25 May, 19 to 21 June, 3 to 5 July, 5 to 7 September, 10 to 12 October and 25 to 27 December. It also finds the one-day breaks. When a holiday is on a Tuesday or a Thursday, one day off next to it gives four days in a row. In 2026 that is Friday 2 January after New Year's Day (1 to 4 January) and Friday 27 November after Thanksgiving (26 to 29 November). Months with no federal holiday in 2026 are March, April and August.

Inauguration Day

OPM says that federal employees in the Washington, DC area get a holiday on 20 January for each fourth year after 1965. It is not on the national list, so it is off by default. Tick Include Inauguration Day to add it for the years it applies to (2025, 2029, 2033 and so on). OPM also notes there is no in-lieu-of day for employees who are not scheduled to work on that day.

What this page does not cover

These are the federal holidays only. State holidays, bank holidays and the days private employers give can differ, and they are not added here. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, so earlier years leave it out, and the rules shown are today's rules, so the list for much older years may not match what was in force then. For anything that matters, such as pay or a deadline, check the source that applies to you. This page is a date calculation, not legal advice.

To count working days around these dates, use the working days calculator. For a month by month printable calendar with your own dates, see the printable calendar, and for the days to a single date, countdown to date.
