Working days of the week

Holidays

One a line: a date, a range with "to", or MM-DD for every year. A name after it is fine.

Guide

How to count working days, with worked examples.

A working days calculator counts the days you can actually work between two dates: it leaves out the weekend and any holidays. You can also run it the other way and find the date that falls a number of working days after, or before, a start date. This one lets you choose which days of the week are off, so it also fits a Friday and Saturday weekend, a Sunday-only week or a six day week, and it handles the US federal holidays and your own list of days off.

How to use the working days calculator

  1. Choose Working days between dates or Date after N working days at the top.
  2. Pick the dates. For a range, Count the start date and Count the end date decide whether each end counts. Both on matches the way the spreadsheet NETWORKDAYS function counts.
  3. Under Weekend, choose the days off, or tick the working days one by one. The presets and the ticks stay in step.
  4. Tick US federal holidays to take them off, and choose whether to use the day off (observed) or the actual date. Add your own days off in the box.
  5. Read the cards. Under them, a table gives the working days of each month, the holidays that were skipped, and every day in the range with its status. Copy days as CSV copies that list for a spreadsheet.

Worked examples

October 2026 has 31 days, with 5 Saturdays and 4 Sundays: 9 weekend days, so 22 weekdays. Columbus Day falls on Monday 12 October, so with the US holidays on the answer is 21 working days. A full year, 1 January to 31 December 2026, has 261 weekdays and 11 federal holidays that all land on weekdays, so 250 working days.

For the other direction, start on Friday 23 October 2026 and add 10 working days. The next working days are Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October (5), and Monday 2 November to Friday 6 November (5). The answer is Friday 6 November 2026, 14 calendar days later. Start on Friday 20 November 2026 and add 5 working days with the US holidays on: Thanksgiving is Thursday 26 November, so the count is Monday 23, Tuesday 24, Wednesday 25, Friday 27 and Monday 30 November. The answer is Monday 30 November 2026.

A different weekend

In some countries the weekend is Friday and Saturday. October 2026 has 5 Fridays and 5 Saturdays, so taking those off leaves 21 working days. With only Sunday off the same month has 27. The calculator does not know your country, so tick what your business actually does. The count also depends on how you treat the ends: counting both the start and the end is the usual spreadsheet way, and leaving one out removes a day.

US federal holidays

The US list follows the Office of Personnel Management page (OPM federal holidays, checked 24 Oct 2026). Working from its 2026 and 2027 dates, the rules are: New Year's Day on 1 January; Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the third Monday in January; Washington's Birthday, the third Monday in February; Memorial Day, the last Monday in May; Juneteenth on 19 June; Independence Day on 4 July; Labor Day, the first Monday in September; Columbus Day, the second Monday in October; Veterans Day on 11 November; Thanksgiving, the fourth Thursday in November; and Christmas on 25 December. OPM says that when a holiday falls on a Saturday the Friday before is treated as the holiday, and when it falls on a Sunday the Monday after is. 4 July 2026 is a Saturday, so the day off is Friday 3 July.

The list uses today's rules. Juneteenth is included from 2021 only, and older years may have followed other rules. The observed days assume a Monday to Friday week. If your week is different, switch to Actual date and add any moved days yourself. OPM also lists Inauguration Day on 20 January every fourth year after 1965 as a holiday for federal employees in the Washington, DC area only, so it is off by default. Private employers and many states set their own days, so use your own list for those.

Your own days off

Type one on each line. A single date such as 2026-11-27, a range such as 2026-12-24 to 2026-12-31, or 12-25 for every year. A line the calculator cannot read is shown above the results so you can fix it. A day off that already falls on a weekend off is not counted twice.

Limits

The two dates must be within 100 years of each other. The result is a count of calendar days, so clock changes and time zones do not affect it. This is maths, not legal or payroll advice: check contract dates, public holidays and notice periods with the source that applies to you.

For plain day counts between dates, see days between dates. To add calendar days instead, use the date calculator, and for a printable year with the holidays marked, see the printable calendar.

Questions

Good to know.

How do I count working days between two dates?

Pick the start and end dates. Weekends are taken off by default. Turn on US federal holidays or add your own days off, then read the Working days card.

Is the start date counted?

By default yes, and so is the end date, the way the spreadsheet NETWORKDAYS function does it. Untick Count the start date or Count the end date to leave one out.

Can I use a Friday and Saturday weekend?

Yes. Choose Friday and Saturday off under Weekend, or tick the working days one by one for any pattern.

Are the US federal holidays built in?

Yes, from the OPM list by their rules, with the Friday or Monday day off when one lands on a weekend. Tick US federal holidays to use them.

How do I add my own holidays?

Type them in Your own days off, one a line: a date, a range with the word to, or MM-DD for every year.

How do I add working days to a date?

Choose Date after N working days, pick the date and the number. The start day is not counted, so day one is the next working day.

Does it count half days?

No. A day is either a working day or not. Use the hours in a working day box to turn the result into hours.
