How to convert grams to ounces, for food and for gold.

To convert grams to ounces, divide the grams by 28.349523125. So 1 g is 0.03527 oz, 100 g is 3.5274 oz and 250 g is 8.81849 oz. This is the ordinary avoirdupois ounce, the one used for food, post and body weight. Gold and silver use troy ounces, which are heavier, and the cards on the page show those too.

How to use the converter

  1. Type a weight in the Grams (g) box, for example 250.
  2. The big result shows Ounces (oz). The cards below give it as pounds and ounces, kilograms and troy ounces.
  3. Type ounces in the other box to go back to grams.
  4. Choose Decimals. Two places suit a recipe, four suit a jewelry weight.
  5. Click a row in Common values, then press Copy result or Copy link. Print chart prints a chart for a kitchen scale.

The definition

The ounce is one sixteenth of the pound, and the pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, so one ounce is exactly 28.349523125 g. NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C lists "1 avoirdupois ounce (oz)" as 28.349 523 125 grams. NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8 rounds it to 28.34952 grams. Both were checked 18 Oct 2026. The factor has nine decimals and ends there, so it is used as written. The only rounding is the last digit shown.

Mental shortcuts and how wrong they are

Divide by 28. For 280 g: 280 ÷ 28 = 10 oz. The exact answer is 9.877. The shortcut is 1.25 percent too high. Or multiply by 0.035: 100 g × 0.035 = 3.5 oz against the exact 3.5274, which is 0.78 percent low. A pocket rule is that 454 g is a pound, which is 16.01 oz, or 16 oz to a very small error.

Worked examples

  • A 250 g pack of butter. 250 ÷ 28.349523125 = 8.81849 oz, or 8.8 oz.
  • A 500 g bag of pasta. 17.63698 oz, which is 1 lb 1.6 oz.
  • A 5 g sachet. 0.1764 oz.
  • A 1 kg bag. 35.27396 oz, or 2 lb 3.3 oz.
  • 100 g of gold. By the ordinary ounce it is 3.5274 oz. By the troy ounce it is 3.2151 oz t, because a troy ounce is 31.1035 g. Price lists for gold use troy.

The mistake: troy against avoirdupois, and the 28 g rule

If you want an ounce of gold or silver, you want the troy ounce, which is 9.71 percent more than the ordinary one. Using the wrong ounce on 100 g gives 3.527 against 3.215. The second point is the label rule. 21 CFR 101.9(b)(5)(viii) says that for nutrition labelling, 1 oz in weight means 28 g. A pack label saying 28 g per ounce is rounded, and 28.35 g is the true figure. For a recipe the difference is small. For a postal rate, use the exact value.

Pack sizes in ounces and pounds

Packs are sold in round grams, and the US label also shows ounces. The table gives the exact value, and the same weight as pounds and ounces.

GramsOuncesPounds and ouncesTroy ounces
10 g0.3530.4 oz0.322
28 g0.9881 oz0.9
50 g1.7641.8 oz1.608
100 g3.5273.5 oz3.215
250 g8.8188.8 oz8.038
454 g16.0141 lb 0 oz14.596
500 g17.6371 lb 1.6 oz16.075
1000 g35.2742 lb 3.3 oz32.151

A pack of 454 g is 16.014 oz, a hair under a pound, since a pound is 453.592 g. The label rule rounds 1 oz to 28 g, so a 56 g serving is 2 oz on a label and 1.975 oz in truth.

Choosing decimals for grams and ounces

A kitchen scale reads to the nearest gram or to 0.1 oz, so two decimals of an ounce are plenty for a recipe. For jewelry, a gem or a coin, use three or four decimals and the troy card. For postage, check what the carrier uses. If it rounds up to the next whole ounce, 29 g is 1.023 oz and counts as 2 oz. Set Decimals to match.

Who uses grams to ounces

Bakers who own a metric scale and a US recipe. People who cook from a food label. Jewelers, coin collectors and anyone buying precious metal. Postal senders with a scale in grams and a rate card in ounces. For the ounce count of a pound see Ounces in a pound. For milliliters, not grams, see the ML to oz converter.
