Guide
How to convert kg to lbs, with worked examples.
To convert kg to lbs, multiply the kilograms by 2.20462. One kilogram is 2.20462 lbs, 10 kg is 22.04623 lbs and 70 kg is 154.32358 lbs. This converter does that for you as you type, and also shows the weight as pounds and ounces and as stone and pounds, which is how weights are often said out loud.
How to use the converter
- Type a weight in the Kilograms (kg) box, for example 70. The big result under it shows the pounds.
- To go the other way, type in the Pounds (lb) box instead. The kilograms update at once.
- Pick Decimals if you want a set number of places, from 0 to 8. Auto shows up to five decimals and drops the zeros at the end.
- Read the small cards under the result for the same weight as pounds and ounces, stone and pounds, grams and ounces.
- Press Copy result to copy a line such as 70 kg = 154.32358 lbs, or Copy link to share the page with your number already in it. Press Print chart for a sheet of common weights.
The exact factor, and where it comes from
The pound is defined from the kilogram: one international avoirdupois pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg. NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C lists 1 pound as 0.453 592 37 kilograms, and the same table lists 1 ounce as 28.349 523 125 grams. NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B.8 rounds the pound to 0.4535924 kg. The kilogram itself is the SI unit of mass, fixed by the value of the Planck constant, as the BIPM page on the kilogram explains. All three were checked 18 Oct 2026.
Because the pound is the exact number and the kilogram is the thing you start with, kg to lbs is a division: pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237. That is the same as multiplying by 2.2046226218 and more digits that never end. Every answer is therefore a rounded one. The converter works with exact fractions and rounds only the last digit shown, so 1,000,000 kg comes out as 2,204,622.62185 lbs, not a float with drift.
A shortcut for doing it in your head
Double the kilograms, then add a tenth of that double. For 70 kg: 70 × 2 = 140, a tenth of 140 is 14, and 140 + 14 = 154. The exact answer is 154.32358, so the shortcut is 0.32 lb low. The shortcut multiplies by 2.2 instead of 2.20462, so it always runs 0.21 percent low. That is fine for a bag or a person and too coarse for a shipment: 1,000 kg by the shortcut is 2,200 lbs, while the real figure is 2,204.62262 lbs, about 4.6 lbs more.
Worked examples
- A person at 70 kg. 70 × 2.2046226218 = 154.32358 lbs. In pounds and ounces that is 154 lb 5.2 oz. In stone and pounds it is 11 st 0.3 lb, which is how people in the UK often say it.
- A baby at 3.5 kg. 3.5 × 2.2046226218 = 7.71618 lbs, or 7 lb 11.5 oz. Birth weights in the US are often said in pounds and ounces.
- A bag limit of 23 kg. 23 × 2.2046226218 = 50.70632 lbs. A bag that reads 50 lbs on a US scale is 0.71 lbs under that limit.
- A 20 kg barbell. 20 × 2.2046226218 = 44.09245 lbs. A bar marked 45 lbs is 20.41166 kg, a little heavier, so check which bar you are using before you add plates.
A mistake that is easy to make here
The common slip is to mix up decimal pounds with pounds and ounces. 154.5 lbs is not 154 lbs 5 oz. The half pound is 8 ounces, so 154.5 lbs is 154 lbs 8 oz. This tool shows both forms, so read the one your scale or form asks for. The other slip is dividing by 2.2 when you meant to multiply: pounds is always the bigger number, about double the kilograms. If your answer is smaller than the kilograms, you turned it the wrong way, so press the swap button or use the LBS to KG converter.
Body weights in kilograms, pounds and stone
Three ways of saying the same weight are in use, and one number often has to move between them. The table gives some round weights in kilograms with the exact conversion in pounds, in pounds and ounces, and in stone and pounds.
| Kilograms | Pounds | Pounds and ounces | Stone and pounds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 45 kg | 99.21 lbs | 99 lb 3.3 oz | 7 st 1.2 lb |
| 50 kg | 110.23 lbs | 110 lb 3.7 oz | 7 st 12.2 lb |
| 60 kg | 132.28 lbs | 132 lb 4.4 oz | 9 st 6.3 lb |
| 70 kg | 154.32 lbs | 154 lb 5.2 oz | 11 st 0.3 lb |
| 80 kg | 176.37 lbs | 176 lb 5.9 oz | 12 st 8.4 lb |
| 90 kg | 198.42 lbs | 198 lb 6.7 oz | 14 st 2.4 lb |
| 100 kg | 220.46 lbs | 220 lb 7.4 oz | 15 st 10.5 lb |
Stone and pounds is a UK and Irish habit and one stone is 14 pounds, so 70 kg is 11 stone and a fraction of a pound. Pounds alone is the US habit. Kilograms are used in most other places and in medicine and sport. When you fill a form, copy the unit it asks for and not the one you are used to.
How many decimals to keep
The right number of decimals depends on the job. For a person, whole pounds or one decimal is plenty, since a scale at home is rarely better than 0.1 kg, which is 0.22 lb. For a baby, ounces matter, so use the pounds and ounces card. For a parcel or a shipping quote, round up, not to the nearest: 12.3 kg is 27.117 lbs, and a carrier that bills by the whole pound may charge for 28. For science and engineering, keep five or more decimals, and use Decimals to set it so every row of the table matches.
Who uses kg to lbs, and why
Anyone reading a metric number in a country that uses pounds. Travellers check a luggage limit given in kilograms. Gym users read plates and dumbbells marked in kg when they train in pounds. Parents compare a baby's birth weight between a clinic that writes kilograms and a family that thinks in pounds. Shippers and online shoppers convert parcel weights. The same factor serves all of them, and only the rounding changes: a baby needs ounces, a pallet needs the nearest pound.
For grams and ounces see the Grams to ounces converter, and for the ounce count of a pound see Ounces in a pound. For many other units use the unit converter.
