To convert kg to pounds and ounces, divide the kilograms by 0.45359237 to get pounds, keep the whole number as the pounds, and multiply the leftover decimal by 16 to get the ounces. For 3.5 kg that gives 7.716179 lb, so 7 lb and 0.716179 × 16 = 11.459 oz. Written out: 7 lb 11.5 oz. The tool does these steps exactly and shows them under the result.

How to use the converter

The sum by hand

1. Divide the kilograms by 0.45359237. A pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg in NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C (checked 24 Oct 2026). Dividing is the same as multiplying by about 2.2046226.
2. The whole part is the pounds.
3. Multiply what is left of the pound by 16, since a pound is 16 ounces in the same table. That is the ounces.

Take 5 kg. 5 ÷ 0.45359237 = 11.023113 lb. The whole part is 11. The rest is 0.023113 lb, and × 16 = 0.370 oz. So 5 kg is 11 lb 0.4 oz to one decimal. A common slip is to read 11.02 lb as 11 lb 2 oz. The .02 is a fraction of a pound, not a count of ounces.

Common weights

Worked examples

• 3.4 kg. 3.4 ÷ 0.45359237 = 7.49572 lb, so 7 lb 7.9 oz. In whole ounces that is 7 lb 8 oz.
• 2.75 kg. 6.06271 lb, so 6 lb 1 oz.
• 0.5 kg. Under a pound: 1.10231 lb, so 1 lb 1.6 oz. The pounds part is 1 because 0.5 kg is more than 1 lb.
• 4.535 kg. 9.99796 lb. The ounces come to about 15.97, which rounds up to 16 and carries into the pounds, so the result is 10 lb 0 oz. The tool does this carry for you.
• 70 kg. 154 lb 5.2 oz, which is 11 st 0.3 lb.
• Pounds and ounces back to kg. 9 lb 4 oz is 9 × 16 + 4 = 148 oz, and 148 × 0.028349523125 = 4.1957 kg.

Stone and pounds

The same Handbook table sets 14 pounds to a stone. The card under the result shows it: 11 st 0.3 lb for 70 kg. Go from the pounds figure, not the pounds-and-ounces form, so keep the decimal pounds card in view when you need stone.

Checking the answer the other way

Type the pounds and ounces you got back into the two right-hand boxes. If you chose whole ounces, the kilograms will differ by a little. For 3.5 kg, 7 lb 11.5 oz comes back as 3.5012 kg, and 7 lb 11 oz as 3.487 kg, a difference of 14.2 g. That gap is the cost of rounding the ounces, and it is why the choice is on the page.

How exact should the ounces be?

Whole ounces are the usual form: 3.5 kg is 7 lb 11.5 oz, which is 7 lb 11 oz or 7 lb 12 oz depending on how you round. One half ounce is 14.17 g, so rounding to whole ounces can be off by up to that much. Choose Whole ounces for a form, 1 decimal for most uses, or Nearest 1/4 oz when you need a number a scale marked in quarter ounces can show. The rounding is done once, on the total, and never on a rounded pound figure.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is reading decimal pounds as ounces, as above. The second is rounding the pounds before finding the ounces. Rounding to one decimal of a pound first can move the ounces by up to 0.8 oz, because 0.05 lb × 16 = 0.8 oz. The third is the factor 2.2: it is close, but 10 kg × 2.2 = 22 lb, while the exact answer is 22.046 lb. The fourth is mixing the avoirdupois pound with the troy pound, which is a different weight used for precious metals; this page is the ordinary pound.
