Guide
How to convert kilograms to grams, including the small amounts.
To convert kilograms to grams, multiply by 1,000, which moves the decimal point three places to the right. So 2.5 kg is 2,500 g, 0.75 kg is 750 g and 12 kg is 12,000 g. The answer is exact, with no rounding step, because the prefix kilo means exactly one thousand.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the Kilograms (kg) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
- The big result shows Grams (g). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- The cards under the result show the same weight in milligrams, pounds and ounces.
- Type grams in the second box, or press ⇄, to turn the pair around.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
Three steps right
Take 3.2 kg. Move the point one place: 32. Two places: 320. Three places: 3200. Each missing digit is filled with a zero, so 3.2 kg is 3,200 g. A whole number just gets three zeros: 4 kg is 4,000 g. A small number gains fewer zeros than you expect: 0.005 kg is 5 g, and 0.0375 kg is 37.5 g. You never need more than three places of movement.

The source
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C gives "10 hectograms = 1 kilogram" and "10 decigrams = 1 gram", and states "1 000 kilograms = 1 megagram (Mg) or 1 metric ton (t)". Chained, that is 1 kg = 1,000 g and 1 metric ton = 1,000,000 g. Checked 24 Oct 2026.
Worked examples
- A 1.5 kg bag of flour. 1.5 × 1,000 = 1,500 g.
- A 0.35 kg portion of meat. 0.35 × 1,000 = 350 g.
- Baby weight, 3.4 kg. 3,400 g. In pounds and ounces that is 7 lb 7.9 oz; see Kg to pounds and ounces.
- A 75 kg person. 75,000 g, and in stone and pounds 11 st 11.3 lb.
- Dividing a 2.4 kg tub into 8 servings. 2.4 kg is 2,400 g, and 2,400 ÷ 8 = 300 g each.
- 0.0004 kg. 0.4 g, which is 400 mg. Very small weights are easier to compare in grams or milligrams.
Dividing a weight into portions
Grams are easier to share out than kilograms. Convert first, then divide.
| Weight | In grams | Split into | Each portion |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.2 kg | 1,200 | 6 | 200 g |
| 2 kg | 2,000 | 8 | 250 g |
| 0.9 kg | 900 | 12 | 75 g |
| 3.6 kg | 3,600 | 9 | 400 g |
Price per kilogram to price per gram
A price of 12.50 per kilogram is 12.50 ÷ 1,000 = 0.0125 per gram, so 80 g costs 80 × 0.0125 = 1.00. The factor is the same one this page uses, applied in the other direction. And a weight written as 1 kg 250 g is 1,250 g: convert the kilograms and add the grams.
Chains you may need
From kilograms to grams to ounces: 0.45 kg is 450 g, and 15.873 oz. From kilograms to grams per serving: 1.8 kg for 12 servings is 1,800 g ÷ 12 = 150 g each. Going up, 2,400 kg is 2.4 metric tons. The prefix ladder stays the same in every step: each one is a factor of 1,000 apart, so grams to milligrams is another ×1,000, and 2,000 mg is only 0.002 kg.
Mistakes to avoid
The most common slip is multiplying by 100, as for metres to centimetres. Kilo is a thousand, so 3 kg is 3,000 g, not 300 g. A second is a number copied with a dot used as a thousands mark. Some number styles write one thousand five hundred as 1.500. Here a dot is always a decimal point, so 1.500 kg is read as 1,500 g. Type 1500 or 1,500 if you mean fifteen hundred kilograms. The third is writing the answer as "kg" again by habit, when it should be g. Keep the label with the number.
For the same weight in pounds use KG to LBS. For the opposite direction see Grams to kg, and for very small amounts Grams to mg.
