Guide
How to convert grams to kilograms, and not slip a zero.
To convert grams to kilograms, divide the grams by 1,000, which means moving the decimal point three places to the left. So 2,500 g is 2.5 kg, 750 g is 0.75 kg and 35 g is 0.035 kg. The result is exact, since a kilogram is defined here as 1,000 grams.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the Grams (g) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
- The big result shows Kilograms (kg). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- The cards under it show the same weight in pounds, ounces and milligrams.
- Type kilograms in the second box, or press ⇄, to go from kg back to grams.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
Where 1,000 comes from
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C sets out the metric mass ladder: "10 hectograms = 1 kilogram" and "10 decigrams = 1 gram", which ends at 1 kg = 1,000 g. The same table says 1,000 kilograms make a metric ton. Checked 24 Oct 2026. Because the prefix kilo means a thousand, there is no rounded factor to worry about. Grams to pounds, which does have a messy factor, is on Grams to pounds.
Shifting the point
Count three steps left. 5,000 g: the point sits after the last zero, so 5.000, which is 5 kg. 250 g has no visible point, so write 250. and move it: 0.250, which is 0.25 kg. 12.5 g becomes 0.0125 kg. If the number is shorter than three digits, add zeros in front: 8 g is 0.008 kg, not 0.08 kg.
| Grams | Kilograms | Pounds |
|---|---|---|
| 1 g | 0.001 | 0.0022 |
| 10 g | 0.01 | 0.02205 |
| 100 g | 0.1 | 0.2205 |
| 250 g | 0.25 | 0.5512 |
| 500 g | 0.5 | 1.1023 |
| 1,000 g | 1 | 2.2046 |
| 1,500 g | 1.5 | 3.3069 |
| 5,000 g | 5 | 11.023 |
Worked examples
- A 2,500 g parcel. 2,500 ÷ 1,000 = 2.5 kg.
- A 1,250 g loaf of sourdough dough. 1.25 kg.
- 35 g of seeds. 0.035 kg. This is where the extra zero goes wrong most often.
- A 50,000 g load. 50,000 ÷ 1,000 = 50 kg.
- Three bags of 450 g. 3 × 450 = 1,350 g, which is 1.35 kg.
- Back to grams. 0.6 kg × 1,000 = 600 g. Type 0.6 in the kilograms box.
Mixed readings, such as 1 kg 250 g
Some scales and labels give kilograms and grams together. To turn 1 kg 250 g into one number, add the grams as a fraction of a kilogram: 250 g is 0.25 kg, so the total is 1.25 kg. For 2 kg 75 g, the 75 g is 0.075 kg, giving 2.075 kg, not 2.75. Always keep three digits after the point for the grams part, with a zero in front when the grams are under 100.
Price per gram and price per kilogram
If something costs 0.012 per gram, one kilogram costs 0.012 × 1,000 = 12. If a bag of 400 g costs 3.20, the price per kilogram is 3.20 ÷ 0.4 = 8.00. Comparing prices per kilogram is fair only when both are converted the same way, which is a good use of this page.
From grams to kilograms to pounds
Two steps are often chained. Take 1,500 g. First 1.5 kg. Then pounds: 3.3069 lb, which is 3 lb 4.9 oz. The second step has the awkward factor, so keep the first one in grams to avoid doubling the rounding. A metric ton sits one step above: 1,000,000 g is 1,000 kg, which is one metric ton, and the same Handbook says 1,000 kilograms make one megagram or metric ton.
| Grams | Kilograms | Metric tons |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 g | 1 | 0.001 |
| 250,000 g | 250 | 0.25 |
| 1,000,000 g | 1,000 | 1 |
| 5,500,000 g | 5,500 | 5.5 |
Mistakes to avoid
The first is moving the point two places, as for centimetres. A kilogram is a thousand grams, not a hundred. The second is mixing up the gram with the milligram: 1 g is 1,000 mg, so 500 mg is only 0.5 g, which is 0.0005 kg. The third is a number written with a comma or a dot as a thousands mark. This tool reads "1,500" as one thousand five hundred and "1.5" as one and a half. A comma followed by one or two digits, such as "2,5", is read as the decimal mark. A fourth is the label "kgs". The plural symbol is still kg; there is no s.
The recipe side of this is on Grams to ounces. For the other direction use Kg to grams, and for milligrams see Mg to grams.
