KB to MB converter, the 1,000 answer and the 1,024 answer together.
Type kilobytes and read megabytes. A second card gives the binary answer in mebibytes, because some programs divide by 1,024 and still print MB. The two answers differ by 2.4 percent.

How to convert KB to MB, and which number to trust.
To convert KB to MB, divide by 1,000. So 2,500 KB is 2.5 MB, 500 KB is 0.5 MB and 100 KB is 0.1 MB. That is the SI meaning, where kilo is 1,000 and mega is 1,000,000. If your program counts in 1,024s, divide by 1,024 instead: 2,500 KiB is 2.441 MiB.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the Kilobytes (kB) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
- The big result shows Megabytes (MB). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- The first card reads your number as KiB (1,024 bytes) and shows MiB, the binary answer. The others give the same size in KiB, MiB and bytes.
- Type in the second box, or press the swap button, to convert megabytes to kilobytes instead.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
Two systems, one set of letters
In the SI, 1 kB is 1,000 bytes and 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes, so 1 MB = 1,000 kB. Computers grew up counting memory in powers of two, so 1,024 bytes were also called a kilobyte. To end the confusion, the NIST page on prefixes for binary multiples names the binary units: the kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes and the mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes. So 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB. Both pages read 24 Oct 2026.
How big is the gap?
A MiB is 1,048,576 bytes and a MB is 1,000,000 bytes, so a MiB is 4.86 percent bigger. In kilobyte terms, 1,000 kB is 1 MB, but 1,000 KiB is only 0.9766 MiB. At 5,000 KB the gap is small enough to ignore for an email attachment: 5 MB against 4.88 MiB.
KB to MB table
| KB | MB (divide by 1,000) | MiB (KiB ÷ 1,024) |
|---|---|---|
| 100 KB | 0.1 | 0.098 |
| 256 KB | 0.256 | 0.25 |
| 500 KB | 0.5 | 0.488 |
| 1,000 KB | 1 | 0.977 |
| 1,024 KB | 1.024 | 1 |
| 2,048 KB | 2.048 | 2 |
| 5,000 KB | 5 | 4.883 |
| 10,000 KB | 10 | 9.766 |
| 50,000 KB | 50 | 48.828 |
| 100,000 KB | 100 | 97.656 |
Worked examples
- A 750 KB image. 750 ÷ 1,000 = 0.75 MB.
- A 2,048 KB file. 2.048 MB by SI, and exactly 2 MiB in binary.
- A 25,000 KB document. 25 MB.
- Back the other way. 3 MB = 3,000 kB. Press the swap button and type 3.
Where the numbers come from
Prefixes follow the NIST page on prefixes for binary multiples, which says kilo, mega and giga are powers of ten and kibi, mebi and gibi are powers of two. Checked 24 Oct 2026. A byte here is 8 bits. The converter uses exact fractions and rounds only the last digit.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not compare a size in KB with a limit in KiB without checking. Upload limits often say "MB" without saying which one. If a file is close to the limit, leave a margin of 5 percent. And keep the case: kB is bytes, kb or kbit is bits, which is 8 times smaller.

Questions
Good to know.
How many KB are in 1 MB?
1,000 KB in the SI system. In binary, 1,024 KiB make 1 MiB.
How many MB is 1,000 KB?
1 MB.
How many MB is 1,024 KB?
1.024 MB by SI, or exactly 1 MiB if KB means 1,024 bytes.
How many MB is 500 KB?
0.5 MB.
Why do two programs show different sizes for one file?
One divides by 1,000 and the other by 1,024. The byte count is the same.
Is KB the same as kb?
No. KB or kB is kilobytes. kb is kilobits, one eighth the size.
What is a KiB?
A kibibyte, which is 1,024 bytes.
