Mbps to MB/s converter, megabits into megabytes per second.

Type megabits per second and read megabytes per second. A download bar shows MB/s, a plan says Mbps, and the two differ by a factor of 8. A time box shows how long a file takes.

Guide

How to convert Mbps to MB/s, divide by eight.

To convert Mbps to MB/s, divide by 8. So 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s, 8 Mbps is 1 MB/s and 1,000 Mbps is 125 MB/s. A byte has 8 bits, and the capital letters tell you which you have: Mb or Mbps means bits, MB or MB/s means bytes.

How to use the converter

  1. Type the amount in the Megabits per second (Mbps) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
  2. The big result shows Megabytes per second (MB/s). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
  3. The cards under the result give the same speed in other units, such as bytes per second.
  4. Type in the second box, or press the swap button, to convert megabytes per second to megabits per second instead.
  5. Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.

Why the number gets smaller

The same stream of data is counted two ways. Count bits and you get a big number. Count bytes (groups of 8 bits) and you get a number one eighth as big. So 400 Mbps of bits is 50 MB/s of bytes, with the same data moving.

Download time

The box under the converter divides a file size by a speed. Put in a size and a speed and it gives the time at a steady rate, then lists the time for 1, 5, 50 and 100 GB and how much moves in an hour. Real downloads are slower, because of overhead, Wi-Fi, other devices and busy servers. Use Usable speed for that: type the share of the line speed you really get, for example from a speed test on your own network, and the time follows. It starts at 100, the best case. The size and the share are remembered in this browser.

Worked examples

  • A 300 Mbps Wi-Fi link. 300 ÷ 8 = 37.5 MB/s at best.
  • A 25 Mbps plan. 3.125 MB/s, so a 100 MB file needs 32 seconds.
  • A 1 GB file at 80 Mbps. 1 GB is 8,000 megabits; ÷ 80 = 100 seconds.
  • Back the other way. 10 MB/s = 80 Mbps. Press the swap button and type 10.

MB/s or MiB/s?

MB/s is 1,000,000 bytes per second. MiB/s is 1,048,576 bytes per second, 4.9 percent more per unit. Some tools print MiB/s but label it MB/s, so a number that looks 5 percent off may be the same speed. See the NIST page on prefixes for binary multiples, read 24 Oct 2026.

Where the numbers come from

Rate prefixes are SI: kilo is 1,000 and mega is 1,000,000, as in the NIST Guide to the SI. A byte is 8 bits. Checked 24 Oct 2026. The converter uses exact fractions and rounds only the last digit shown.

Questions

Good to know.

How many MB/s is 100 Mbps?

12.5 MB/s.

How many MB/s is 1 Mbps?

0.125 MB/s.

How many MB/s is 1,000 Mbps?

125 MB/s.

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps is megabits per second. MB/s is megabytes per second. One byte is 8 bits.

Why is my download slower than the plan says?

The plan speed is a top rate. Headers, Wi-Fi, other devices and the server all take a share.

How many Mbps is 10 MB/s?

80 Mbps.
