Guide
How to convert Mbps to Gbps, in one step.
To convert Mbps to Gbps, divide by 1,000. So 2,500 Mbps is 2.5 Gbps, 940 Mbps is 0.94 Gbps and 100 Mbps is 0.1 Gbps. Network rates use the SI prefix giga, which is exactly 1,000 mega.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the Megabits per second (Mbps) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
- The big result shows Gigabits per second (Gbps). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- The cards under the result give the same speed in other units, such as bytes per second.
- Type in the second box, or press the swap button, to convert gigabits per second to megabits per second instead.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
Why 1,000 and not 1,024
Storage sometimes counts in 1,024s. Link speeds do not. Gigabit Ethernet signals 1,000,000,000 bits each second, so 1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps. The NIST Guide to the SI describes the SI prefixes as powers of ten. Read 24 Oct 2026.
Plan names and what they mean in practice
A 1 Gbps line moves up to 125 MB/s, since 1,000 ÷ 8 = 125. A 2.5 Gbps line moves up to 312.5 MB/s and a 10 Gbps line up to 1,250 MB/s. These are line rates before overhead.
Download time
The box under the converter divides a file size by a speed. Put in a size and a speed and it gives the time at a steady rate, then lists the time for 1, 5, 50 and 100 GB and how much moves in an hour. Real downloads are slower, because of overhead, Wi-Fi, other devices and busy servers. Use Usable speed for that: type the share of the line speed you really get, for example from a speed test on your own network, and the time follows. It starts at 100, the best case. The size and the share are remembered in this browser.

| 100 | 0.1 | 12.5 |

| 500 | 0.5 | 62.5 |

| 100,000 | 100 | 12,500 |
Worked examples
- A 900 Mbps test result. 0.9 Gbps.
- A 5,000 Mbps port. 5 Gbps.
- A 50 GB file at 1 Gbps. 50 GB is 400,000 megabits; ÷ 1,000 = 400 seconds, which is 6 min 40 s.
- Back the other way. 0.5 Gbps = 500 Mbps.
Wi-Fi and wired speeds
A router box may print a combined figure such as 1,800 Mbps. That is 1.8 Gbps on paper, but check what the figure adds up before you compare it with a plan. A wired port is simpler: a 2,500 Mbps port runs at 2.5 Gbps. When you compare a plan with a port, convert both to the same unit first.
Where the numbers come from
Rate prefixes are SI: kilo is 1,000 and mega is 1,000,000, as in the NIST Guide to the SI. A byte is 8 bits. Checked 24 Oct 2026. The converter uses exact fractions and rounds only the last digit shown.

Questions
Good to know.
How many Gbps is 1,000 Mbps?
1 Gbps.
How many Gbps is 100 Mbps?
0.1 Gbps.
How many Gbps is 2,500 Mbps?
2.5 Gbps.
Is 1 Gbps the same as 1,024 Mbps?
No. Network speeds use 1,000, so 1 Gbps is 1,000 Mbps.
How many MB/s is 1 Gbps?
125 MB/s at the line rate.
Why does my 1 Gbps plan test at 940 Mbps?
Some of the line carries headers and framing. A reading of 940 is common for a gigabit wired link, and the box above shows what it means for a file.
Why is my download slower than the calculator says?
The calculator uses a steady speed with nothing in the way. Wi-Fi, other devices, the server and protocol overhead all take a share. Lower the Usable speed box to the share you really get.
