Guide
How to convert Gbps to Mbps, by moving the decimal.
To convert Gbps to Mbps, multiply by 1,000. So 1 Gbps is 1,000 Mbps, 2.5 Gbps is 2,500 Mbps and 10 Gbps is 10,000 Mbps. In practice you move the decimal point three places to the right.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the Gigabits per second (Gbps) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
- The big result shows Megabits per second (Mbps). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- The cards under the result give the same speed in other units, such as bytes per second.
- Type in the second box, or press the swap button, to convert megabits per second to gigabits per second instead.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
Moving the decimal
0.94 Gbps becomes 940 Mbps. 0.1 Gbps becomes 100 Mbps. 0.05 Gbps becomes 50 Mbps. 1.5 Gbps becomes 1,500 Mbps. If the Gbps number has no decimals, add three zeros.

Download time
The box under the converter divides a file size by a speed. Put in a size and a speed and it gives the time at a steady rate, then lists the time for 1, 5, 50 and 100 GB and how much moves in an hour. Real downloads are slower, because of overhead, Wi-Fi, other devices and busy servers. Use Usable speed for that: type the share of the line speed you really get, for example from a speed test on your own network, and the time follows. It starts at 100, the best case. The size and the share are remembered in this browser.
Worked examples
- A 10 Gbps port. 10,000 Mbps, up to 1,250 MB/s.
- Splitting 1 Gbps into 4 equal shares. 1,000 ÷ 4 = 250 Mbps each.
- A 100 GB backup at 2.5 Gbps. 100 GB is 800,000 megabits; ÷ 2,500 = 320 seconds, or 5 min 20 s.
- Back the other way. 750 Mbps = 0.75 Gbps.
Where the numbers come from
Rate prefixes are SI: kilo is 1,000 and mega is 1,000,000, as in the NIST Guide to the SI. A byte is 8 bits. Checked 24 Oct 2026. The converter uses exact fractions and rounds only the last digit shown.
Sharing a fast link
A 10 Gbps link shared by 20 streams that each need 100 Mbps uses 2,000 Mbps, or 2 Gbps, which is a fifth of the link. Converting to Mbps makes this sum easy: 10 Gbps is 10,000 Mbps, and 20 × 100 = 2,000 of those. Leave room above the sum, since traffic comes in bursts.
Mistakes to avoid
Gbps with a small b is gigabits. GB/s is gigabytes, 8 times more data per second. A 1 Gbps link is 0.125 GB/s, so do not expect a gigabyte each second from it.

Questions
Good to know.
How many Mbps is 1 Gbps?
1,000 Mbps.
How many Mbps is 2.5 Gbps?
2,500 Mbps.
How many Mbps is 10 Gbps?
10,000 Mbps.
How many Mbps is 0.5 Gbps?
500 Mbps.
Is Gbps the same as GB/s?
No. GB/s is gigabytes per second and is 8 times bigger.
How many GB per hour is 1 Gbps?
1 Gbps is 125 MB/s, so 450 GB in an hour at the line rate.
Why is my download slower than the calculator says?
The calculator uses a steady speed with nothing in the way. Wi-Fi, other devices, the server and protocol overhead all take a share. Lower the Usable speed box to the share you really get.
