Guide
How to convert bits per second to Mbps, and what it means for downloads.
To convert bits per second to Mbps, divide by 1,000,000. So 25,000,000 bit/s is 25 Mbps, 8,000,000 bit/s is 8 Mbps and 64,000 bit/s is 0.064 Mbps. Network speeds use the SI prefix mega, which is exactly one million.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the Bits per second (bit/s) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
- The big result shows Megabits per second (Mbps). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- The cards under the result give the same speed in other units, such as bytes per second.
- Type in the second box, or press the swap button, to convert megabits per second to bits per second instead.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
Bits, not bytes
Mbps with a small b is megabits per second. A byte has 8 bits, so 8 Mbps moves one megabyte each second. A speed of 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s. When a download bar shows MB/s, divide the Mbps figure by 8 to compare.
Download time
The box under the converter divides a file size by a speed. Put in a size and a speed and it gives the time at a steady rate, then lists the time for 1, 5, 50 and 100 GB and how much moves in an hour. Real downloads are slower, because of overhead, Wi-Fi, other devices and busy servers. Use Usable speed for that: type the share of the line speed you really get, for example from a speed test on your own network, and the time follows. It starts at 100, the best case. The size and the share are remembered in this browser.

Worked examples
- A 5,000,000 bit/s stream. 5 Mbps, or 0.625 MB/s.
- A 250,000,000 bit/s link. 250 Mbps.
- A 4 GB file at 100 Mbps. 4 GB is 32,000 megabits; 32,000 รท 100 = 320 seconds, which is 5 min 20 s.
- A 1.5 Mbps link in bits. Press the swap button and type 1.5: 1,500,000 bit/s.
Where the numbers come from
Rate prefixes are SI: kilo is 1,000 and mega is 1,000,000, as in the NIST Guide to the SI. A byte is 8 bits. Checked 24 Oct 2026. The converter uses exact fractions and rounds only the last digit shown.
Old and new speeds side by side
Speeds in plain bits per second are common in older documents and in device settings. A 56,000 bit/s link is 0.056 Mbps, a 1,544,000 bit/s link is 1.544 Mbps, and a 100,000,000 bit/s port is 100 Mbps. Writing the number in Mbps makes it easy to compare with a modern plan, where 500 Mbps is 500,000,000 bit/s.
Mistakes to avoid
Mixing Mbps and MB/s is the usual error. The capital B means bytes. Also, a plan sold in Mbps is a top speed, not a promise for every moment, and Wi-Fi often gives less than the wire.

Questions
Good to know.
How many Mbps is 1,000,000 bits per second?
1 Mbps.
How many bits per second are in 1 Mbps?
1,000,000.
How many Mbps is 1,000 bit/s?
0.001 Mbps, which is 1 kbps.
Is Mbps the same as MB/s?
No. Mbps is megabits per second. MB/s is megabytes per second, 8 times bigger.
Does Mbps use 1,000 or 1,024?
Network speeds use 1,000, so 1 Mbps is exactly 1,000,000 bit/s.
How long does a 1 GB file take at 8 Mbps?
1 GB is 8,000 megabits, so at 8 Mbps it takes 1,000 seconds, or 16 min 40 s.
Why is my download slower than the calculator says?
The calculator uses a steady speed with nothing in the way. Wi-Fi, other devices, the server and protocol overhead all take a share. Lower the Usable speed box to the share you really get.
