Ounces to pints, US or UK, exactly.
Type fluid ounces and read US pints. Cards show the UK pint too, because a UK pint is 20 of its own ounces and a US pint is 16. A weight ounce is a different thing, and the guide says how to handle that.

Guide
How to convert ounces to pints, and which pint you mean.
To convert fluid ounces to US pints, divide by 16. So 8 fl oz is 0.5 pt, 12 fl oz is 0.75 pt and 32 fl oz is 2 pt. NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C (checked 24 Oct 2026) lists the US liquid pint as 16 fluid ounces and 28.875 cubic inches. In Britain the pint is bigger, 20 fluid ounces, but a British fluid ounce is slightly smaller than a US one, so the two pints are not 25 percent apart in size.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the US fluid ounces (fl oz) box.
- The big result shows US pints (pt). Use Decimals in the side column if you want fewer places.
- Look at the cards for US cups, quarts, mL and the same number read as UK fluid ounces in UK pints.
- Use the arrows or the S key to go from pints to ounces. Click a row in Common values to load it.
- Copy result and Copy link keep your answer.
US pint against UK pint
The Notes on British Units in the same Handbook give the UK gallon as 160 fluid ounces, 4.546 liters, with 20 fluid ounces to the pint. A US gallon is 128 fluid ounces. The tool uses 4.54609 L for the UK gallon from NIST SP 811 (NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8, checked 24 Oct 2026).
| Measure | Fluid ounces | Milliliters | US pints |
|---|---|---|---|
| US pint | 16 US fl oz | 473.17647 | 1 |
| UK pint | 20 UK fl oz | 568.26125 | 1.20095 |
| US half pint | 8 US fl oz | 236.58824 | 0.5 |
| UK half pint | 10 UK fl oz | 284.13063 | 0.60047 |
So a UK pint holds about 1.201 US pints, a difference of roughly 20 percent. A UK fluid ounce is 28.4131 mL against 29.5735 mL for the US one. If a recipe or a drinks menu is British, type its ounces in the UK card line, or divide by 20.
Worked examples
- A 16 oz coffee. 16 ÷ 16 = 1 pint.
- A 12 fl oz can. 12 ÷ 16 = 0.75 pint, which is 1.5 cups.
- A 20 fl oz bottle. 20 ÷ 16 = 1.25 pints. Read as UK ounces it would be exactly 1 UK pint.
- A 64 fl oz carton. 64 ÷ 16 = 4 pints, which is a half gallon.
- A 33.8 fl oz bottle. 2.1125 pints, close to 2 pints and about a liter.
- Back the other way. 3 pints × 16 = 48 fl oz.
When the ounces are weight
Fluid ounces measure space. An ounce on a food scale measures weight, and the two only match for water-like liquids by luck. A pint is a volume, so there is no single answer for "16 ounces of flour in pints". If the ounces are weight, go through grams and a cup: use ounces to grams, then grams to cups for the ingredient, and divide the cups by 2 to get pints. This page answers the fluid case only.
The dry pint
The same Handbook lists a dry quart as 67.2006 cubic inches, so a dry pint is half of that, 33.6003 cubic inches, about 550.6 mL. It is for dry goods, not liquids, and the tool does not use it. It is about 16.4 percent bigger than the liquid pint of 28.875 cubic inches.
Pints, cups and quarts together
| Pints | Fluid ounces | US cups | US quarts |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 8 | 1 | 0.25 |
| 1 | 16 | 2 | 0.5 |
| 2 | 32 | 4 | 1 |
| 4 | 64 | 8 | 2 |
| 8 | 128 | 16 | 4 |
Two pints make a quart, four quarts make a gallon, and a cup is half a pint. For quarts see quarts to cups. For gallons see fluid ounces to gallons.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is using 20 for a US drink. The second is mixing the weight ounce with the fluid ounce. The third is rounding too early: 100 fl oz is 6.25 pints, not 6, and the extra quarter pint is a whole cup and a bit. Keep the decimals until the last step.
