Quarts to cups, times four.

To convert quarts to cups, multiply by 4. So 2 quarts is 8 cups, 5 quarts is 20 cups and 10 quarts is 40 cups. This is exact for US liquid measure. NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C (checked 24 Oct 2026) lists the US liquid quart as 57.75 cubic inches, and the cup as 8 fluid ounces exactly, with 32 fluid ounces to the quart. 32 ÷ 8 = 4.

How to use the converter

Three cup sizes

The US customary cup is 236.588 mL. Nutrition labels in the US use a cup of 240 mL, as 21 CFR 101.9(b)(5)(viii) puts it (checked 24 Oct 2026), and some recipes written outside the US use a 250 mL cup. Nothing official was read for the 250 mL cup, so treat it as a common recipe size. A quart of 946.353 mL holds:

If a recipe says 4 cups from a quart of broth, the US cup is the right reading. If it comes from a label, a quart is about 3.94 label cups, so the label rounds to a little under 4.

Worked examples

• A quart of milk. 1 × 4 = 4 cups.
• A half quart of cream. 0.5 × 4 = 2 cups.
• A 6 quart slow cooker filled to the brim. 6 × 4 = 24 cups. Most are not filled to the brim, so check the manual.
• A stockpot of 12 quarts. 12 × 4 = 48 cups, or 3 gallons.
• 2.5 quarts of punch. 2.5 × 4 = 10 cups, which is 80 fl oz.
• Servings. A 3 quart pot of soup is 12 cups. At 1.5 cups a bowl that is 8 bowls.

Liquid quarts and dry quarts

A dry quart is a different size. The same Handbook gives it as 67.2006 cubic inches, against 57.75 for the liquid quart, which is about 1.164 times bigger. Dry quarts are for dry goods. This page is for liquid quarts. A dry quart of anything is not 4 US cups.

UK quarts

The UK quart is 2 UK pints, or 40 UK fluid ounces, about 1.1365 L. That is 4.804 US cups. The notes on British units in the Handbook give 20 fluid ounces to the UK pint and 160 to the UK gallon. UK recipes often use mL, so the safest step is to follow the mL.

Mistakes to avoid
