Guide
How to convert cups to quarts, and scale a recipe in your head.
To convert US cups to quarts, divide the cups by 4. There are 4 cups in a quart, so 8 cups is 2 quarts, 6 cups is 1.5 quarts and 1 cup is 0.25 quart. The sum is exact. The reverse is a multiplication: a quart of anything is 4 cups, and 2.5 quarts is 10 cups.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the US cups (cup) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
- The big result shows US quarts (qt). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- Cards show pints, US fluid ounces, gallons and liters for the same amount.
- Type quarts in the second box, or press ⇄, to see the cups in a number of quarts.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
The ladder of US liquid measures
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C gives the US liquid steps as 2 pints = 1 quart and 4 quarts = 1 gallon, and counts the fluid ounces as 16 per pint, 32 per quart and 128 per gallon. It lists a measuring cup as 8 fluid ounces exactly, which is half a pint. Checked 24 Oct 2026. Put together: 1 quart = 2 pints = 4 cups = 32 fluid ounces, and 1 gallon = 16 cups.
| Cups | Quarts | Pints | Fluid ounces |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0.25 | 0.5 | 8 |
| 2 | 0.5 | 1 | 16 |
| 4 | 1 | 2 | 32 |
| 6 | 1.5 | 3 | 48 |
| 8 | 2 | 4 | 64 |
| 12 | 3 | 6 | 96 |
| 16 | 4 | 8 | 128 |
Worked examples
- A soup recipe with 10 cups of stock. 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5 quarts. A 3 quart pot is too small; a 4 quart pot works.
- 6 cups of ice cream base. 1.5 quarts, or 3 pints.
- 3 1/2 cups. Type 3 1/2 and read 0.875 quart.
- 14 cups of punch. 3.5 quarts, which is 112 fl oz and 3.312 liters.
- One cup. 0.25 quart, which is 0.2366 liters.
- Quarts back to cups. 3/4 quart × 4 = 3 cups.
Which pot for how many cups?
A pot should not be full to the brim. Leave room, and buy or pick one bigger than the liquid. Here is the liquid, in quarts, for common amounts.
| Cups of liquid | Quarts | Leave about a quarter spare, so a pot of |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 1 | 1.25 qt or more |
| 8 | 2 | 2.5 qt or more |
| 12 | 3 | 3.75 qt or more |
| 16 | 4 | 5 qt or more |
| 20 | 5 | 6.25 qt or more |
Doubling and halving
Since 4 cups make a quart, doubling a recipe that uses 6 cups gives 12 cups, which is 3 quarts. Halving 6 cups gives 3 cups, which is 0.75 quart. For a batch that is 5 cups and a quarter, type 5 1/4 and read 1.3125 quarts. The tool takes mixed fractions, so there is no need to turn them into decimals first.
Cups, pints, quarts and gallons in a row
| Measure | In cups | In US fl oz | In mL |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 cup | 1 | 8 | 236.59 |
| 1 pint | 2 | 16 | 473.18 |
| 1 quart | 4 | 32 | 946.35 |
| 1/2 gallon | 8 | 64 | 1,892.7 |
| 1 gallon | 16 | 128 | 3,785.4 |
The UK difference
The same Handbook says the British gallon is divided into 160 fluid ounces with 20 ounces to the pint, so a UK quart is 2 pints of 20 UK fl oz, which is 40 UK fl oz. A US quart is 32 US fl oz. In liters a UK quart is 1.1365 L against 0.9464 L, about 20 percent more. A recipe from outside the US may use a different cup, so convert through mL when a recipe crosses a border. See mL to cups.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is mixing the quart with the liter. A quart is 0.946 L, a bit less than a liter, so 4 cups is slightly under a liter. The second is using a dry quart for a liquid recipe. The third is dividing by 2 because a pint comes before the quart in the list: from cups it is 4, not 2. The fourth is a cup of a different size. If your measuring cup is the 250 mL metric kind, 4 of them make one liter, not one US quart.
