Guide
How to convert quarts to liters, and which quart you hold.
To convert US liquid quarts to liters, multiply by 0.946353 (more exactly 0.946352946). So 1 quart is 0.9464 L, 2 quarts is 1.8927 L and 4 quarts, one gallon, is 3.7854 L. A quart is a little less than a liter, about 5.4 percent less. For a quick check, take the quarts, subtract 5 percent and you are close.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the US quarts (qt) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
- The big result shows Liters (L). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- Cards show milliliters, US gallons, cups and fluid ounces for the same amount.
- Type liters in the second box, or press ⇄, to see how many quarts a number of liters is.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
Where the factor comes from
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C lists the US liquid quart as 57.75 cubic inches, 2 pints, a quarter of the 231-cubic-inch gallon, and gives 1 liquid quart = 0.946 352 9 liter. The gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters, so a quart is 3.785411784 ÷ 4 = 0.946352946 L exactly. NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 agrees: 9.463 529 E−01 liter. Checked 24 Oct 2026.
The UK quart and the dry quart
Three things are called a quart. The US liquid quart is the one on this page. The UK (Imperial) quart is a quarter of the British gallon, 4.54609 ÷ 4 = 1.1365225 L, about 20.1 percent bigger. It holds 2 British pints of 20 UK fl oz, so 40 UK fl oz. The US dry quart is for dry goods, and NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C puts it at 1.101 221 liters, also checked 24 Oct 2026. The dry quart is a measure for dry goods, the liquid quart for liquids.
| Quart | Liters |
|---|---|
| US liquid quart | 0.946353 |
| US dry quart | 1.101221 |
| UK (Imperial) quart | 1.136523 |
Worked examples
- A quart of oil. 1 × 0.946353 = 0.946 L, or 946.4 mL.
- A 6 quart slow cooker. 6 × 0.946353 = 5.68 L.
- A 5 quart oil change. 4.732 L. A car that asks for 5 liters needs 5.283 US quarts.
- A 12 quart stockpot. 11.36 L, which is 3 gallons.
- Half a quart. 0.5 × 0.946353 = 0.4732 L, which is 2 cups.
- A 3 1/2 quart pot. Type 3 1/2 and read 3.312 L.
A table to keep

|---|---|---|
| 0.25 qt | 0.2366 | 236.6 |
| 0.5 qt | 0.4732 | 473.2 |
| 1 qt | 0.9464 | 946.4 |
| 2 qt | 1.8927 | 1,892.7 |
| 3 qt | 2.8391 | 2,839.1 |
| 4 qt | 3.7854 | 3,785.4 |
| 5 qt | 4.7318 | 4,731.8 |
| 6 qt | 5.6781 | 5,678.1 |

| 10 qt | 9.4635 | 9,463.5 |
Rule of thumb, and how far off it is
To go from quarts to liters in your head, take the quarts and knock off about 5 percent. To go from liters to quarts, add about 5.7 percent. For 10 quarts the rule gives 9.5 L; the exact answer is 9.464 L, so the error is 0.036 L. For 10 liters the rule gives 10.57 quarts, and the exact figure is 10.567 quarts. The rule is fine for a quick check and poor for anything where you need to match a mark on a container.
Pint, quart and gallon in liters, US and UK
| Measure | US liters | UK liters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 pint | 0.473176 | 0.568261 |
| 1 quart | 0.946353 | 1.136523 |
| 1/2 gallon | 1.892706 | 2.273045 |
| 1 gallon | 3.785412 | 4.54609 |
The UK pint is bigger because it holds 20 UK fl oz against 16 US fl oz. See Fluid ounces to gallons for the ounces.
Mistakes to avoid
The biggest is assuming a quart and a liter are the same. The gap is 5.4 percent, which matters for engine oil or a recipe scaled up. The second is using the wrong quart when a UK label gives one. The third is using the dry quart for a liquid. The fourth is rounding the factor to 0.95 and doing a long chain of sums: 20 quarts would give 19.00 L, against the true 18.927 L.
