Guide
How to convert liters to gallons, and which gallon to pick.
To convert liters to gallons, multiply the liters by 0.264172 for US gallons, or by 0.219969 for UK gallons. So 10 liters is 2.6417 US gallons and 2.1997 UK gallons. Or divide: a US gallon is 3.785412 liters, so 3.785412 liters is exactly one gallon. The two gallons differ by about 20 percent, which is why this page shows both at once.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the Liters (L) box. Decimals and fractions work.
- The big result shows US gallons (gal). The first card under it, UK gallons, is the same volume in British gallons.
- The other cards give US quarts, cups and fluid ounces.
- Type gallons in the second box to go back to liters, or open the Unit converter for other units.
- Pick Decimals for a fixed number of places, click a row in Common values to load it, and use Copy result, Copy link, Copy table or Print chart to keep the answer.
The two factors, and their sources
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C defines the US gallon as exactly 231 cubic inches. A cubic inch is 16.387064 mL exactly, which makes the gallon exactly 3.785411784 liters. The same page lists 1 liter as 0.264 172 1 gallons, so the factor above is that table value, written with six digits. For the British gallon, NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 gives exactly 4.54609 liters, and Handbook 44 says the British gallon is about 20 percent bigger than the US one. One liter is then 0.219969 UK gallons. Pages checked 19 Oct 2026.
| US gallon | UK gallon | |
|---|---|---|
| Liters in one gallon | 3.785412 | 4.54609 |
| Gallons in one liter | 0.264172 | 0.219969 |
| Gallons in 10 liters | 2.64172 | 2.19969 |
Worked examples
- A 2 liter bottle. 2 × 0.264172 = 0.5283 US gallons, or 0.4399 UK gallons. In US fluid ounces that is 67.63.
- A 20 liter container. 5.283 US gallons, 4.399 UK gallons.
- A 50 liter tank. 13.209 US gallons, 10.998 UK gallons. The gap between the two is 2.21 gallons, which is easy to measure in a tank.
- A 3.785 liter jug. 0.9999 US gallons, so it is a gallon to the nearest thousandth of a liter.
- A 1000 liter tank. 264.17 US gallons, 219.97 UK gallons.
Liters to US and UK gallons

Small amounts in fluid ounces
Under a gallon the numbers get small, so fluid ounces are easier to read. These rows use the same exact factor.
| Liters | US gallons | US fluid ounces | US cups |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.25 | 0.066 | 8.45 | 1.057 |
| 0.5 | 0.1321 | 16.91 | 2.113 |
| 1 | 0.2642 | 33.81 | 4.227 |
| 1.5 | 0.3963 | 50.72 | 6.34 |
| 2 | 0.5283 | 67.63 | 8.454 |
| 3 | 0.7925 | 101.44 | 12.68 |
How the factor is built, and the way back
The factor is 1 ÷ 3.785411784, which is 0.2641720523 before rounding. The tool keeps the exact fraction and rounds only the last digit you see. For a quick mental check, 10 liters × 0.26 is 2.6 gallons, against the true 2.6417, so 0.26 is good to about 2 percent. To go back, multiply gallons by 3.785412: 1 US gallon is 3.785 liters, 5 gallons is 18.927 liters and 15 gallons is 56.781 liters. Type gallons in the second box and the answer appears in the first.
Price per liter to price per gallon
Fuel and liquids are often priced per liter abroad and per gallon at home. The price scales the opposite way from the volume. Multiply a price per liter by 3.785412 to get the price for a US gallon, or by 4.54609 for a UK gallon. For example, a price of 1.50 per liter is 1.50 × 3.785412 = 5.678 for a US gallon. This is only the volume maths. It does not convert between currencies and it is not advice.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is the wrong gallon. A UK source that says "gallon" means 4.54609 liters. A US source means 3.785412. If a UK source says 10 gallons and you read it as US gallons, you get 37.85 liters instead of 45.46, which is 16.7 percent short. The second is rounding the factor early. 0.26 instead of 0.264172 is out by 1.58 percent. The third is the quart. Handbook 44 gives a liter as 1.057 liquid quarts and also as 0.908 dry quarts, so a liter is a little more than a liquid quart. The cards use liquid quarts.
Smaller sizes are on ML to oz and Cups to ounces. For ounces in a gallon see Gallons to ounces. For quarts see Quarts to gallons.
Questions
Good to know.
How many gallons are in a liter?
0.264172 US gallons, or 0.219969 UK gallons.
How many gallons are in 10 liters?
2.6417 US gallons, or 2.1997 UK gallons.
How many liters are in a gallon?
A US gallon is 3.785412 liters. A UK gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters.
Which gallon should I use?
US gallons for American sources and US recipes, UK gallons for British ones. If the source does not say, look at the country it comes from.
How many gallons is a 2 liter bottle?
