Guide
How to convert liters to milliliters, and read the labels right.
To convert liters to milliliters, multiply by 1,000, which moves the decimal point three places to the right. So 1.5 L is 1,500 mL, 0.25 L is 250 mL and 5 L is 5,000 mL. The sum is exact because milli means one thousandth. A liter is also a cubic decimeter, so 1 mL fills the same space as 1 cubic centimeter.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the Liters (L) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
- The big result shows Milliliters (mL). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- The cards give the same amount in US cups, fluid ounces, tablespoons and teaspoons.
- Type milliliters in the second box, or press ⇄, for mL to liters.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
What NIST says
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C gives "10 deciliters = 1 liter = 1,000 milliliters" and notes that the 12th General Conference on Weights and Measures (1964) made the liter a special name for the cubic decimeter. Checked 24 Oct 2026. Since a decimeter is 10 cm, a cubic decimeter is 10 × 10 × 10 = 1,000 cubic centimeters, which is why 1 L is 1,000 mL and 1 mL is 1 cm³.
| Metric volume unit | In liters | In milliliters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 liter (L) | 1 | 1,000 |
| 1 deciliter (dL) | 0.1 | 100 |
| 1 centiliter (cL) | 0.01 | 10 |
| 1 milliliter (mL) | 0.001 | 1 |
Worked examples
- A 1.5 L bottle. 1.5 × 1,000 = 1,500 mL.
- A 0.75 L bottle. 750 mL.
- A 3.8 L jug. 3,800 mL.
- Soup with 2.5 L of stock. 2,500 mL, or 10.57 US cups.
- 0.05 L of syrup. 50 mL, which is 3.38 US tablespoons.
- Back to liters. 750 mL ÷ 1,000 = 0.75 L. Type 750 in the mL box.
Dividing a liter into equal portions
| Portions | Each, in mL | Each, in US fl oz |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 500 | 16.91 |
| 4 | 250 | 8.45 |
| 5 | 200 | 6.76 |
| 8 | 125 | 4.23 |
| 10 | 100 | 3.38 |
Bigger and smaller units
The same Handbook tables give 1 liter = 0.001 cubic meter, so a cubic meter is 1,000 liters, and 1,000,000 mL. A cubic centimeter is one mL, and a cubic decimeter is one liter. A small tank of 0.25 cubic meter holds 250 L, or 250,000 mL. Going down to a teaspoon, 4.929 mL is one US teaspoon, so a liter holds 202.9 of them.
From a box to liters
A box that measures 20 cm × 15 cm × 10 cm holds 3,000 cubic centimeters, which is 3,000 mL and 3 L. Each cubic centimeter is one mL, and each 1,000 of them is one liter, so the sum is the three sides multiplied, divided by 1,000. A tank of 40 × 25 × 30 cm holds 30,000 cm³, so 30,000 mL and 30 L. This is the quickest route from a ruler to a volume.
Reading the symbol
The capital L is the standard symbol for liter in the US list, which avoids a lowercase l that looks like the digit 1. Milliliter is mL. You will meet ml, ML and l in the wild, and they all mean the same thing as long as the prefix is "milli". The risk is mixing dL, cL and mL: a bottle that says 75 cL holds 750 mL, not 75 mL. The table above sets them side by side.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is multiplying by 100, as for centimeters. The second is carrying a decimal mark from one country's number style: here a dot is a decimal point and a comma followed by three digits is a thousands mark, so 1,500 means fifteen hundred. The third is treating mL and g as the same. That only holds for water, roughly, and this page does not claim it. For ingredient weights use mL to grams.

Questions
Good to know.
How many ml are in a liter?
1,000 milliliters, exactly.
How many ml is half a liter?
500 mL.
How many ml is 2 liters?
2,000 mL.
How many ml is 0.1 liter?
100 mL.
Is ml the same as cc?
A milliliter is the same volume as a cubic centimeter, which is where the cc comes from.
How many liters is 500 ml?
0.5 liter.
How many ml is 75 cL?
750 mL, since 1 cL is 10 mL.
Should I write l or L?
Capital L is the form in the NIST list. It cannot be mistaken for the number 1.
