Liters to ounces converter, US and UK ounces side by side.
Type liters (litres) and read US fluid ounces. A card gives UK fluid ounces for the same amount, because the two ounces differ. These are fluid ounces, which measure volume, not ounces of weight.

Guide
How to convert liters to ounces, and which ounce you need.
To convert liters to US fluid ounces, multiply by about 33.814. So 1 L is 33.814 fl oz, 2 L is 67.63 fl oz and 0.5 L is 16.907 fl oz. For UK fluid ounces, multiply by 35.195 instead. The two differ by about 3.9 percent, since a UK fluid ounce is smaller. These are volume ounces; a liter of water has a weight in ounces too, but that is a different calculation.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the Liters (L) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
- The big result shows US fluid ounces (fl oz). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- The first card gives UK fluid ounces. Others give US cups, US gallons and quarts.
- Type fluid ounces in the second box, or press ⇄, to go from ounces to liters.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
Where the numbers come from
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C lists 1 liter = 33.814 02 US fluid ounces, and defines the US fluid ounce as 1/128 of the 231-cubic-inch gallon, so 29.573 53 mL. The British fluid ounce is 1/160 of the British gallon, which NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 gives as 4.546 09 liters, making it 28.4131 mL. Checked 24 Oct 2026. The US nutrition-label rule, 21 CFR 101.9(b)(5)(viii), rounds a fluid ounce to 30 mL for labelling (checked 24 Oct 2026), and 1,000 ÷ 30 = 33.33 label ounces in a liter.
| Ounce | Size in mL | Ounces in 1 liter |
|---|---|---|
| US fluid ounce | 29.5735 | 33.814 |
| UK fluid ounce | 28.4131 | 35.1951 |
| Label ounce (30 mL) | 30 | 33.3333 |
Worked examples
- A 1 L bottle. 1 × 33.814 = 33.81 US fl oz, or 35.2 UK fl oz.
- A 1.5 L bottle. 50.72 US fl oz.
- A 2 L soda. 67.63 US fl oz, which is 8.45 US cups.
- A 3 L water jug. 101.4 US fl oz.
- A 0.33 L can. 0.33 × 33.814 = 11.16 US fl oz. A 12 fl oz can is 354.9 mL.
- Ounces back to liters. 64 fl oz = 1.893 L. Type 64 in the second box.
Common bottle sizes in fluid ounces
| Liters | US fl oz | UK fl oz |
|---|---|---|
| 0.33 L | 11.16 | 11.61 |
| 0.5 L | 16.91 | 17.6 |
| 0.75 L | 25.36 | 26.4 |
| 1 L | 33.81 | 35.2 |
| 1.5 L | 50.72 | 52.79 |
| 2 L | 67.63 | 70.39 |
| 3 L | 101.44 | 105.59 |
Glasses in a liter
An 8 fl oz glass holds 236.6 mL, so a liter fills 33.814 ÷ 8 = 4.23 glasses. A 12 fl oz can holds 354.9 mL, so a 2 L bottle is about 67.6 ÷ 12 = 5.64 cans. If your glass is a different size, divide the liter's ounces by its size.
Large volumes
| Liters | US fl oz | UK fl oz | US gallons |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 L | 169.1 | 176 | 1.321 |
| 10 L | 338.1 | 352 | 2.642 |
| 20 L | 676.3 | 703.9 | 5.283 |
| 50 L | 1,690.7 | 1,759.8 | 13.209 |
At this size the ounce count is long, so gallons are easier to read. The UK ounce column is larger because the UK ounce is the smaller unit.
Fluid ounces are not weight ounces
The ounces here fill space. A weight ounce is 28.349523125 g. A liter of water, a liter of oil and a liter of syrup each hold 33.81 fluid ounces but weigh different amounts. If the recipe or shipping form wants weight, look up the density of the liquid or weigh it. For weight ounces use Ounces to grams.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is using the US figure for a UK label, or the reverse. A British label that says fl oz means UK ounces. The second is using 33 or 34 as a quick factor on a large amount; with 20 L, 33 gives 660 and the exact figure is 676.3. The third is the word "ounces" alone: if a nutrition panel says "1 oz (28 g)", that is weight. If it says "fl oz (mL)", that is volume.
