Guide
How to convert quarts to gallons, and which quart this is.
To convert quarts to gallons, divide the quarts by 4. A US gallon is exactly 4 liquid quarts, so 1 quart is 0.25 gallon, 2 quarts is 0.5, 3 quarts is 0.75 and 6 quarts is 1.5 gallons. The page uses the US liquid quart, the one in a carton of milk or a can of paint. A dry quart is a different, bigger unit and it does not divide into a gallon.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the US quarts (qt) box. Fractions work: 1/2, 3/4, or a mixed number such as 2 1/2.
- The big result shows US gallons (gal). The cards give pints, cups, fluid ounces and liters for the same amount.
- Type gallons in the second box to go the other way, and read quarts.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Use the arrow keys to add one quart at a time.
- Press Copy result or Copy link to keep the answer, Copy table for the list, or Print chart for a sheet.
Where 4 comes from
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C lists the US liquid units in a chain: 2 pints make a quart, which is 57.75 cubic inches, and 4 quarts make a gallon, which is 231 cubic inches. The conversion table in the same appendix gives "1 liquid quart" as 0.25 gallon. Both are exact, so the division by 4 has no rounding. In metric, one quart is 946.3529 mL and the Handbook rounds it to 0.946 liter. Page checked 19 Oct 2026.
Liquid quart or dry quart
Handbook 44 has two quarts. Footnote 8 in its tables says that when you need to tell a dry pint or quart from the liquid one, the word "dry" is used with the name. The dry quart is 67.201 cubic inches, which the Handbook converts to 1.101 liters, against 57.75 cubic inches and 0.946 liter for the liquid quart. So a dry quart is 1.164 times a liquid quart. The dry table then climbs by pecks and bushels (8 dry quarts make a peck) and has no gallon in it. This page therefore uses the liquid quart and the liquid gallon only. If your quarts are of berries or grain, the answer in gallons is not on this page.
The British quart also divides by 4: four British quarts make a British gallon. But the British units are bigger. Handbook 44 lists the British quart as 1.201 US liquid quarts, so quarts from a UK source do not match a US quart even though the ratio of 4 to 1 is the same. Checked 19 Oct 2026.
Worked examples
- 6 quarts of stock. 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5 gallons, or 5.678 liters.
- 10 quarts of paint. 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5 gallons, which is 2 gallons and 2 quarts.
- 7 quarts. 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75 gallons, or 1 gallon and 3 quarts.
- 1 quart. One quarter gallon, 32 fluid ounces, 4 cups.
- 32 quarts. 32 ÷ 4 = 8 gallons, which is 1,024 fluid ounces.
- 2 3/4 quarts. 2.75 ÷ 4 = 0.6875 gallons. Type 2 3/4 in the box and the tool reads it.
The quart ladder
Every row is exact for the US liquid system. The liter column is rounded to three decimals.
| Quarts | Gallons | Pints | Cups | Fluid ounces | Liters |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 0.125 | 1 | 2 | 16 | 0.473 |
| 1 | 0.25 | 2 | 4 | 32 | 0.946 |
| 2 | 0.5 | 4 | 8 | 64 | 1.893 |
| 3 | 0.75 | 6 | 12 | 96 | 2.839 |
| 4 | 1 | 8 | 16 | 128 | 3.785 |
| 6 | 1.5 | 12 | 24 | 192 | 5.678 |
| 8 | 2 | 16 | 32 | 256 | 7.571 |
| 12 | 3 | 24 | 48 | 384 | 11.356 |
| 16 | 4 | 32 | 64 | 512 | 15.142 |
Shortcut: halve twice
Dividing by 4 is halving twice. For 10 quarts: half is 5, half again is 2.5 gallons. For whole gallons and leftover quarts, count the fours. 14 quarts holds three fours (12) and 2 left over, so it is 3 gallons and 2 quarts, which is 3.5 gallons. The way back is just as easy: gallons times 4 is quarts. A gallon of milk is four quarts, a half gallon is two.
Quarts you might meet
Cooks see quarts on stockpots and cartons. For liquid, quarts convert as above. If an amount is a dry volume, such as grain or berries sold by the dry quart, the gallon conversion on this page does not apply. If a label gives liters as well, trust the liters and use Liters to gallons. A stockpot of 12 quarts holds 3 gallons, and a pot of 20 quarts holds 5 gallons.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is the wrong quart, covered above. The second is treating a quart as a liter. They are close, but a liter is 1.0567 US liquid quarts, so 4 liters is a little more than a gallon: 1.0567 gallons. The third is rounding the liter early. Four times 0.946 is 3.784 liters, but a gallon is 3.785412, so a rounded quart leaves a small gap that grows with the number of gallons. The fourth is a stray decimal. 0.5 quart is 0.125 gallon, not 0.5.
For smaller amounts see Cups to ounces. For ounces in a gallon see Gallons to ounces. For liters see Liters to gallons.
Questions
Good to know.
How many quarts are in a gallon?
Four. A US gallon is 4 liquid quarts, 8 pints or 16 cups.
How many gallons is 1 quart?
0.25 gallon, one quarter.
How many gallons is 2 quarts?
0.5 gallon, a half gallon.
How many gallons is 6 quarts?
1.5 gallons, which is a gallon and a half.
How many gallons is 10 quarts?
2.5 gallons, which is 2 gallons and 2 quarts.
Is a dry quart the same as a liquid quart?
No. Handbook 44 lists the dry quart as 67.201 cubic inches and the liquid quart as 57.75 cubic inches. This page uses the liquid quart.
Is there a dry gallon?
Not in the dry volume table of Handbook 44. It goes from dry quarts to pecks and bushels.
Is a UK quart the same as a US quart?
No. Handbook 44 gives the British quart as 1.201 US liquid quarts. The ratio to the gallon is 4 in both systems, but the units themselves differ.
