How to convert psi to kPa, and back again.

To convert psi to kPa, multiply by 6.89476. So 32 psi is 220.6 kPa, 14.7 psi is 101.35 kPa and 50 psi is 344.7 kPa. To go back, divide kPa by 6.89476, or multiply by 0.145038.

How to use the converter

  1. Type the amount in the Pounds per square inch (psi) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
  2. The big result shows Kilopascals (kPa). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
  3. The cards under the result give the same pressure in other units.
  4. Type in the second box, or press the swap button, to convert kilopascals to pounds per square inch instead.
  5. Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.

The factor, worked out

1 psi = 6,894.757 Pa, and 1 kPa = 1,000 Pa, so 1 psi = 6.894757 kPa. NIST gives 1 psi = 6.894 757 kPa, matching.

A quick estimate

Multiply by 7 and take off 1 percent. 30 psi × 7 = 210, less 2.1 gives 207.9, against the true 206.8. Multiply by 7 alone is 1.5 percent high.

Worked examples

  • Tyre label: 36 psi. 248.2 kPa.
  • A water supply at 60 psi. 413.7 kPa.
  • A compressor tank at 125 psi. 861.8 kPa, or 8.62 bar.
  • Back the other way. 250 kPa = 36.26 psi. Press the swap button and type 250.

Reading a tyre label

Some labels list psi and kPa side by side, and the pair is a good test of this factor. 32 psi should sit next to about 221 kPa, 35 psi next to 241 kPa and 40 psi next to 276 kPa. Labels may round the figure, so a small difference is normal. Use the value on the label for your own vehicle, and use this page only to read it.

Gauge or absolute pressure

A tyre gauge, a pressure washer dial and most boiler gauges show gauge pressure, which is the pressure above the air around them. Absolute pressure counts from a perfect vacuum, so it is the gauge reading plus the air pressure. At one standard atmosphere, 101.325 kPa, 32 psi gauge is 46.696 psi absolute, which is 321.957 kPa. The Gauge or absolute box above the tables does the sum in either direction. Air pressure changes with weather and height, so one standard atmosphere is only an average. The standard atmosphere is from NIST SP 811 Appendix B.8, checked 24 Oct 2026.

Where the numbers come from

NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 lists the pound-force per square inch as 6.894 757 E+03 Pa and 6.894 757 E+00 kPa. Checked 24 Oct 2026. The converter keeps the factors as exact fractions and rounds only the last digit shown. It is a unit converter, not a safety tool: for a tyre, boiler or tank, use the value printed on the equipment or in its manual.

Questions

Good to know.

How many kPa is 1 psi?

6.89476 kPa, rounded.

How many kPa is 32 psi?

220.6 kPa.

How many kPa is 14.7 psi?

101.35 kPa, near one atmosphere.

How many psi is 100 kPa?

14.5 psi.

How many psi is 1 kPa?

0.145038 psi.

Is kPa gauge or absolute?

Either. The unit does not say. Check the source of the reading.

What is the difference between gauge and absolute pressure?

Gauge pressure is measured above the surrounding air. Absolute pressure is measured from a vacuum. Absolute is the gauge reading plus about 101.325 kPa, one standard atmosphere.
