Guide
How to convert psi to bar, and a rule for the head.
To convert psi to bar, multiply by 0.0689476. So 32 psi is 2.206 bar, 100 psi is 6.895 bar and 14.5 psi is 1 bar. You can also divide by 14.5038.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the Pounds per square inch (psi) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
- The big result shows Bars (bar). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- The cards under the result give the same pressure in other units.
- Type in the second box, or press the swap button, to convert bars to pounds per square inch instead.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
The factor, worked out
One psi is a pound-force on one square inch: 0.45359237 kg × 9.80665 m/s² ÷ (0.0254 m)² = 6,894.757 Pa. One bar is 100,000 Pa. So 1 psi = 6,894.757 ÷ 100,000 = 0.0689476 bar.
A rule for the head
Divide by 15 and add a little. For 60 psi, 60 ÷ 15 = 4, and the real answer is 4.137 bar. Another way: psi ÷ 14.5. The second is within 0.03 percent.

Worked examples
- A gauge reading 35 psi. 2.413 bar.
- A line at 120 psi. 8.27 bar.
- A max of 8 bar, in psi. Press the swap button and type 8: 116 psi.
- A 3,000 psi hydraulic rating. 206.8 bar, or 20.68 MPa.
Reading tyres and tanks
Some gauges, pumps and tanks use psi, and others use bar. A rating of 116 psi is 8 bar. Going the other way, 6 bar is 87 psi. Always check a rating in the unit printed on the equipment. This converter helps you read it; it does not tell you what pressure is safe.
Gauge or absolute pressure
A tyre gauge, a pressure washer dial and most boiler gauges show gauge pressure, which is the pressure above the air around them. Absolute pressure counts from a perfect vacuum, so it is the gauge reading plus the air pressure. At one standard atmosphere, 101.325 kPa, 32 psi gauge is 46.696 psi absolute, which is 3.2196 bar. The Gauge or absolute box above the tables does the sum in either direction. Air pressure changes with weather and height, so one standard atmosphere is only an average. The standard atmosphere is from NIST SP 811 Appendix B.8, checked 24 Oct 2026.
Where the numbers come from
NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 lists the pound-force per square inch as 6.894 757 E+03 Pa and the bar as 1.0 E+05 Pa. Checked 24 Oct 2026. The converter keeps the factors as exact fractions and rounds only the last digit shown. It is a unit converter, not a safety tool: for a tyre, boiler or tank, use the value printed on the equipment or in its manual.

How many bar is 30 psi?
2.068 bar.
How many bar is 100 psi?
6.895 bar.
How many psi is 1 bar?

How many bar is 14.7 psi?
1.0135 bar, close to one atmosphere.
Is psi gauge or absolute?
Either. Psig is gauge, psia is absolute. Check which your reading is.
What is the difference between gauge and absolute pressure?
Gauge pressure is measured above the surrounding air. Absolute pressure is measured from a vacuum. Absolute is the gauge reading plus about 101.325 kPa, one standard atmosphere.
